Game Of Thrones' Kit Harington Is Joining The MCU In A Mysterious Role

Kit Harington as Jon Snow in Game of Thrones

For the last eight years, the majority of Kit Harington’s acting career has been devoted to Game of Thrones, though he still managed to do the occasional movie here and there. Now that the HBO series has concluded and Jon Snow is starting a new life beyond the Wall, Harrington is free to join another major franchise, and it looks like that will be the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Word’s come in that Kit Harington has been tapped for a major role in the MCU, although who he’ll play or where he’ll pop up weren’t revealed. That said, Deadline states that Harington would star in an MCU movie as opposed to one of the Disney+ series, so unless the outlet’s information is inaccurate, expect to see him on the big screen rather than the small.

Thus far, looking at the film side of his career, Kit Harington’s biggest appearances have arguably been playing Milo in 2014’s Pompeii and voicing Eret in the latter two How To Train Your Dragon movies. Even though the masses know him best for his Game of Thrones work, and perhaps always will, joining the MCU is a great way for him to branch out and make an impact in another beloved universe full of colorful characters.

As for what MCU movie Kit Harington could star in, there’s definitely no shortage of choices, although one we can automatically rule out is Black Widow since it’s currently filming. I also suspect he won’t be part of The Eternals since that project seems to have already assembled all of its main cast, which includes Harington’s Game of Thrones co-star Richard Madden.

But Phase 4 is also delivering Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Thor: Love and Thunder. I could particularly see Harington appearing in Doctor Strange 2, perhaps as the main villain, who is rumored to be Nightmare. And while Phase 5 hasn’t officially been announced yet, there a number of movies in the works that could easily fill up that slate, including Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Captain Marvel 2 and Blade.

One popular idea that’s circulating on social media is that Kit Harington could playing is Wolverine. Now that the X-Men and Fantastic Four are under the Marvel Studios label thanks to the Disney/Fox merger, it’s only a matter of time before those properties are incorporated into the MCU, even if that’s a long ways off.

Whatever the MCU’s version of the X-Men ends up looking like, given his popularity, you can bet Marvel will introduce its own Wolverine rather than keep him on the shelf. And unlike the tall Hugh Jackman, Harington is closer to Wolverine’s shorter stature, thus making him slightly more faithful to the comics incarnation. No doubt Harington could also do a good job bringing Wolverine’s ferocity to life in his own unique way.

So when will we find out how Kit Harington will contribute to the MCU, whatever it may be? Possibly as soon as tomorrow! D23 is currently underway at Anaheim, and the film side of this franchise will be among the things covered. If the news isn’t announced then, keep checking back with CinemaBlend for any updates about Harington’s involvement.
