Why Tyler Perry Has Decided To Bring Madea Back One More Time

Over 15 years since Tyler Perry raised money to make his film Diary of a Mad Black Woman in 2005, the performer has gone from intimate stage productions as Madea Simmons to making twelve movies starring the character, saying goodbye to her in 2019 with A Madea Family Funeral. But as Perry surprised fans earlier this month, Madea is back, and she’s coming to Netflix.

Tyler Perry has created his own empire in Atlanta, Georgia, where he now owns his own movie studio and produces the many movies and television shows he is part of. Even so, the multi-hyphenate couldn’t let go of his famed character for too long and here’s why:

We need to laugh, man. Too much is going on in the country. We need to laugh. So, I was done… but she wasn’t.

Perry’s next Madea movie is said to be called A Madea Homecoming, which has reportedly been in quiet development since fall of 2020. The movie will be landing on Netflix next year. It’s a huge surprise but, as Tyler Perry shared, he has been inspired by the tragedy many of us have faced in the U.S. This includes the effects of the global pandemic, a divided election year and heightened cultural social awareness of the deep seated racism in the country following the death of George Floyd and other incidents. Yeah… too much is right.

Tyler Perry was completely finished with Madea before 2020 madness, saying back in 2019 that he was “happy to kill that old bitch” and was “tired” of playing her. But in late 2020, before we were aware of Madea’s return, Perry did share that he missed the “laughter and joy” his comedic work brought to fans. The talented man behind Madea took the character on tour to give her a proper farewell but, considering A Madea Family Funeral didn’t exactly impress, in relation to his other appearances, it's a welcome return. We definitely need more comedies ,and Tyler Perry recently struck up a partnership with Netflix. One of his productions, A Fall From Grace, became a huge hit on the platform, raking in over 26 million views during its first week on streaming.

Perry’s character is also coming back through another actor (who has yet to be cast) for a Madea prequel on Showtime called Mabel, which will explore her origins in 1970s Atlanta. We’d imagine A Madea Homecoming will be shot at Tyler Perry’s 330-acre studio ahead of its 2022 release. Perry has a number of other upcoming projects to check out, including Don’t Look Up with Jennifer Lawrence, Jonah Hill, Meryl Streep and Leonardo DiCaprio, coming later this year to Netflix.
