The Marvel Cinematic Universe isn’t the only live-action superhero franchise that’s delving into the multiverse in the near future. DC’s also getting in on the action through The Flash, as Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen will be exploring other realities in a story loosely inspired by Flashpoint. We’ve known for about a year now that both Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck’s versions of Batman will both feature in the Scarlet Speedster’s solo movie, but now it’s looking like we might also see more than one version of our rapid protagonist as well.
The Flash is two months into its principal photography, and as is the case with so many blockbuster productions, set photos have leaked giving us quick tastes of what to look forward to, including seeing Michael Keaton back as Bruce Wayne. The latest photos, shared by FlashFilmNews, show Ezra Miller performing opposite another actor who looks quite similar to him in appearance, build and even outfits. Now while it’s possible this other actor could be simply be playing a friend of Barry’s, plenty of folks are thinking this individual is actually a Barry Allen from another universe.
This is further strengthened by the other actor having some kind of green contraption attached to his back, which the person behind FlashFilmNews speculated could be used as a lighting reference to replace this actor’s face with Ezra Miller’s in postproduction. Now given the fact that Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck’s respective Batmen are both in The Flash, not to mention what we’ve seen in the Arrowverse starting with Crisis on Infinite Earths, not all doppelgängers in the live-action DC multiverse need to look exactly alike. (Remember when Ezra’s Barry ran into Grant Gustin’s version of the Fastest Man Alive?). However, perhaps director Andy Muschietti and the rest of the creative minds decided it would be better if for this movie, any other Barry Allen introduced should look just like Miller.
To be clear, it’s not confirmed yet if we will indeed see more than one Barry Allen in The Flash, but if the DCEU’s Barry is channeling the Speed Force to visit other universes, it stands to reason that eventually he’d run into another version of himself. For now though, Batman is the only confirmed character who will be depicted in at least two different ways. Sasha Calle will also appear as Supergirl in The Flash, but we still don’t know yet which universe the character hails from, let alone if Calle will play more than one version of her.
Along with the aforementioned people, The Flash’s cast also includes Kiersey Clemons as Iris West, Maribel Verdú as Nora Allen, Ron Livingston as Henry Allen (taking over the role from Billy Crudup) and Ian Loh as a younger Barry Allen, as well as Saoirse-Monica Jackson and Rudy Mancuso in undisclosed roles. While there had been plans to include Ray Fisher’s Cyborg, Barry’s fellow Justice Leaguer, it was revealed in January that he’d been cut from the movie. Birds of Prey’s Christina Hodson penned the screenplay.
The Flash races into theaters on November 4, 2022, so keep checking back with CinemaBlend for updates about its progress. We’ll also keep you apprised of news concerning other upcoming DC Comics movies.
