DC’s cinematic film franchise is steadily growing with new movies like The Suicide Squad heading to theaters and others like Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom currently in production. There are also a number of other movies in early development such as Batgirl and Blue Beetle. Both films, which have been in the works for a while, are finally making progress, and Cobra Kai star Xolo Maridueña was reported to be in talks to play Blue Beetle just this week. Now, the up-and-coming actor has seemingly confirmed his casting with the help of a sweet post.
Xolo Maridueña was one of the many stars who attended the premiere of The Suicide Squad in Los Angles last night. And while there, he just so happened to take a photo with Blue Beetle director Angel Manuel Soto, which he posted to Twitter along with a sweet caption. Check it out down below:
One can only imagine the immense pride Xolo Maridueña feels in having landed a role in the world of DC. The fact that the actor is sporting blue is also a very nice touch. Of course, his reference to the ancestors is only a small indication of the larger ramifications his role as Blue Beetle’s Jaime Reyes could have on the DC Extended Universe and film as a whole.
Representation is something that many studios seem to be striving for these days, and it’s finally starting to seep into the world of superheroes. The DC Extended Universe alone has steadily branched out by tapping actors of color to play marquee heroes. This includes Sasha Calle, who’s set to soar across our screens as Supergirl in The Flash and Leslie Grace, who will take on the mantle of Batgirl in her own solo film.
The Jaimie Reyes incarnation of Blue Beetle has been brought to life before, but this will mark the first time the character has appeared in a live-action film. So Xolo Maridueña and Angel Manuel Soto have the opportunity to truly flesh out the character and introduce him to a new generation of fans in the process.
There will be a slight difference in Blue Beetle’s release, compared to those of other DC movies. Like Batgirl, the movie will be part of a slate of films that will bypass theatrical releases and head straight to HBO Max. Those hoping to get themselves set ahead of those films and more can sign up for HBO Max using this link.
Through Cobra Kai, Xolo Maridueña has proven to be a capable and charming actor, so he should be a perfect fit for the DC role. There’s likely still plenty of casting to be, so we’ll be waiting anxiously to see who else ends up joining him and Angel Manuel Soto on this adventure.
