Surprise! Michael Phelps is married, and apparently he has been for over four months now. That's right --- unbeknownst to all of his fans, Phelps was actually a married man when he smashed Olympic records in Rio de Janeiro this summer. News broke on Thursday that the Olympic champion and former Miss USA contestant Nicole Johnson married in a secret ceremony all the way back in June.

Michael Phelps and Nicole Johnson were wed in Paradise Valley, Arizona on June 13 of this year, PEOPLE confirms. The couple had dated on and off since first meeting at the ESPYs in 2007. After several years together, they broke up prior to the 2012 Olympics in London, then reunited a couple years later in 2014. Phelps and Johnson got engaged in 2015, and Johnson gave birth to their first child, a baby boy named Boomer Phelps in May of 2016, just one month before their wedding.

Though the couple kept the marriage very quiet --- even telling reporters that they were still planning the ceremony after they were husband and wife --- Nicole Johnson did mention that she was having a "memorable night" with Michael Phelps and their one-month-old son Boomer on her Instagram. (Meanwhile, on Phelps' Instagram, he was throwing the scent off the nuptials by celebrating National Jerky Day instead).

The wedding came right before Michael Phelps became the most decorated Olympian of all time thanks to his success at the 2016 Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro. Phelps won five gold medals in his swimming events, making his career total of gold medals a record-breaking 28. Nicole Johnson is no stranger to high stakes competition herself. Having competed in beauty pageants since her teenage years, Johnson won the Miss California USA title for 2010, after having previously come in as the first runner-up for the crown. Though she was the favorite to win the Miss USA pageant that year, she wound up coming in ninth, losing to that year's winner Rima Fakih.

The wedding news also means that Michael Phelps has beaten his Olympic swimming teammate Ryan Lochte in yet another race: the race down the aisle. For his part, Lochte proposed to his own model girlfriend Kayla Rae Reid just two weeks ago. The engagement came as a bit of welcome happy news for Lochte, who is still suffering from widespread public disapproval after lying about being robbed at gunpoint while in Brazil for the Olympic games. Rather than being robbed, security footage revealed that Lochte and two other teammates had drunkenly vandalized a local gas station, and the owner was asking them for money to repair the damages. The fallout from the lie has lost Lochte most of his major endorsement deals, gotten him suspended from swimming for a few months, and caused much of the public to turn on him.

Thankfully, Michael Phelps doesn't have any current scandals to worry about right now --- his drunk driving and marijuana controversies seem to be a thing of the past for the most part --- so now he can focus his attention on his new wife and their adorable newborn son.
