The superhero genre keeps going strong, and fans who watched the DC movies in order have recently been introduced to a new shared universe. Crafted by co-CEO James Gunn, the DCU is still in its infancy, with a handful of projects released in theaters and streaming with a HBO Max subscription. The next upcoming DC movie is Supergirl, and it's star Milly Alcock recently responded to folks like Martin Scorsese and Ridley Scott who have criticized comic book movies.

Back in 2019, Scorsese claimed that superhero movies "aren't cinema" starting a debate that's still going strong today. Some have taken the legendary filmmaker's side, while others have stuck up for genre work. While speaking with Vanity Fair Alcock shared her own thoughts, offering:

I get it. They’ve been around for fucking ever making phenomenal films. Not every film is for everyone. The beauty of art is that you can be selective.

There you have it. While Milly Alcock is best known for starring as Supergirl and as pat of the House of the Dragon cast, she doesn't mind that some famous directors aren't fond of genre work. Art is subjective, so folks like Scorsese and Scott (who called comic book movies "boring") are entitled to their opinions. Sounds like a healthy perspective to me.

This is a great perspective for the 25 year-old actress to have, especially as she's early in her tenure as Kara Zor-El in the DCU. While this is a huge opportunity that could make her a household name, it's also a gig that opens her up to a ton of criticism. But she seems to understand that everyone is going to have their own opinions, and there are folks who simply don't enjoy comic book movies.

Alcock debuted as Kara with a Superman cameo, debuting her drunk Kryptonian to audiences. Anticipation for her solo film has been steadily building, especially after Supergirl's full trailer was released. As a reminder, you can check it out below:

While superhero movies aren't for everyone, this movie has something for everyone. Namely because of the emphasis on Krypto, who is once again in danger in his second appearance in the shared universe. Who doesn't love dogs... especially if they have superpowers?

This above trailer is definitely giving some Guardians of the Galaxy vibes, even if James Gunn isn't actually the director. The cosmic story, flawed hero, emphasis on classic rock, and adorable sidekick all bring those sensibilities to the table. But if Krypto dies I will riot in the streets.

All will be revealed when Supergirl hits theaters on June 26th as part of the 2026 movie release list. Although we can assume Martin Scorsese and Ridley Scott won't be in attendance.
