Grey's Anatomy Gets Big Renewal At ABC, Giving Three Stars Larger Roles

Big news for Grey Sloan! Grey's Anatomy isn't just coming back for Season 16 in 2019-2020, ABC has already renewed it for Season 17 in 2020-2021. That's right. The already-record-breaking Grey's Anatomy will continue at least until 2021, so they have no excuse not to give Bokhee her own episode.

In addition to renewing Grey's Anatomy for two more seasons -- with Ellen Pompeo signed on for both as lead Meredith Grey -- ABC also announced three recurring actors would be bumped up to series regular status for Season 16:

• Chris Carmack as ortho god Dr. Atticus Lincoln, aka Link• Jake Borelli as intern Levi Schmitt, aka Glasses• Greg Germann as neurosurgeon Dr. Thomas Koracick

Grey's Anatomy showrunner Krista Vernoff shared a statement with Deadline on the promotions:

Chris, Jake, and Greg have been recurring for us as guest stars and have popped as fan favorites. We are excited to continue revealing their characters and we are beyond thrilled to welcome them to the Grey’s Anatomy family.

Great news! I'm especially excited to see more of Tom Koracick, whom I am currently in a rage for after the May 9 episode. Tom was a bit of a player before meeting Teddy Altman, but he has not only been fine with her being heavily pregnant with another man's (Owen Hunt's) child, he has gone above and beyond to make her life in Seattle wonderful. He's funny, thoughtful -- I think he's quite a catch.

I wanted Tom Koracick for Meredith Grey earlier in the season, but that didn't pan out. Apparently it's not panning out with Teddy either, because Teddy just told Amela -- of all people -- that she's still in love with Owen. Teddy announced it during a surprise visit to Owen's home, where "Auntie Amelia" was there watching little Leo. Teddy's water broke as she revealed her love for Owen.

Owen was busy stuck in traffic, along with Glasses, as they tried to bring in a patient to give young Gus blood.

The Owen/Amelia/Teddy love triangle will continue into this Thursday's Grey's Anatomy Season 15 finale. Amelia actress Caterina Scorsone said it's like a romantic comedy for her character. Does Amelia still have feelings for Owen? She's currently in a relationship with Link, who has also shown her an incredible amount of love and support. But she also used the word "safe" to describe him. Apparently that's not a good thing.

I'm wondering if Teddy dumps Tom Koracick for Owen, but Owen would rather be with Amelia? Owen has been meaning to tell a certain woman he loves her. Who? If it's Amelia, that's very bad timing -- Teddy is about to give birth to their child.

If Amelia decides Link isn't the one for her, will she re-bond with her buddy Koracick? They have a history, and they've always had chemistry too.

I know not everyone agrees, but I think Owen needs to spend a bit more time with himself, or at least just with Leo. He needs to eat, pray, love his way to an understanding of himself instead of having just a couple of therapy sessions and jumping back into another relationship.

What about Glasses? His complicated love story has nothing to do with Owen, Amelia, or Teddy -- unlike the other two guys returning as series regulars next season.

Grey's Anatomy Nico Glasses

Glasses is currently dating Dr. Nico Kim, as his first boyfriend after coming out. But it's awkward, and frosty, since Nico has an attitude problem that is becoming more and more apparent. It's also not clear if he'll be around after the Season 15 finale. Actor Alex Landi booked a new role on a Netflix show, so I'm wondering if Glasses will be a free agent as of Season 16. We'll see.

Grey's Anatomy Season 15's penultimate episode was quite dramatic, and not just because DeLuca is willing to go to prison for Meredith's fraud crime. Find out how it all ends with the Episode 25 finale, "Jump into the Fog," which airs Thursday, May 16 at 8 p.m. on ABC.

Gina Carbone

Gina grew up in Massachusetts and California in her own version of The Parent Trap. She went to three different middle schools, four high schools, and three universities -- including half a year in Perth, Western Australia. She currently lives in a small town in Maine, the kind Stephen King regularly sets terrible things in, so this may be the last you hear from her.
