Why Tyler G. 'Had To Leave' The Bachelorette 2019

Bachelorette Hannah B. and Tyler G. Tyler Gwozdz ABC

SPOILERS ahead from Bachelorette Hannah's season, including the May 27 Episode 3.

Hannah Brown's season of The Bachelorette is off to a dramatic start. In Episode 2, Tyler G. -- full name Tyler Gwozdz -- got the first one-on-one date of the season. It was a bit awkward, hearing Hannah talk a lot about how she struggled to open up during Colton's season of The Bachelor, but she and Tyler seemed to bond and he got a rose.

But things took a strange turn in Episode 3.

What happened? Well, Hannah G. only told the cameras that Tyler G. "had to leave," without sharing details. That was as much as the show revealed. Spoiler guru Reality Steve had warned readers that this was coming. Apparently production had been given some information about Tyler G.'s past relationships and told him it wouldn't be good for him to remain on the show, and he needed to leave right away.

What happened in Tyler G.'s past relationships? Well, stories have been spreading online, including a Reddit thread a couple of months ago. As one person wrote, at the time:

Posting this from a throwaway account because I’m an active poster and don’t want this tied to my account or friends.BUT two of my best friends went to high school with Tyler Gwozdz. They both say that he is the BIGGEST asshole douche of all time. My friend used the words 'extreme misogynist.'The story that most caught my attention involves his treatment of an ex. Apparently he dated a really sweet girl but they would get in public screaming matches often. The relationship ended horrifically - while in Europe he SPIT ON HER and left.Neither of these friends really watch the show but they cannot believe he’s going to be on TV.Why are they doing Hannah like this??

Someone sent that Reddit thread to Bachelor alum Ashley Spivey, who is still very engaged in Bachelor Nation and previously called attention to Garrett Yrigoyen's controversial social media posts during Bachelorette Becca's season. Garrett not only got through the season, Becca picked him and they are now engaged. But Spivey was reportedly going to send the information about Tyler G. on to ABC.

The Bachelor and Bachelorette have notoriously flawed background checks -- but sometimes "flawed" is being generous. Like the idea that they don't know when someone has a girlfriend/boyfriend back home? It's hard to tell what they don't know about vs. what's being used for drama.

But whatever they found when they started digging more into Tyler G.'s past -- it might've been more than just that Reddit thread -- it was enough to pull him from the show. (Also, note that Tyler G. should not be confused with "arm candy" Tyler C., who is still in the running for Hannah's love.)

How Much Are The Bachelorette Stars Paid?

An anonymous source close to Tyler G., age 28 during Bachelorette filming, defended him to Life & Style, calling him "a great guy":

All I know is there is two sides to every story. If he spit on a girl or yelled at her in public, that’s not great, but I know Tyler and I’m sure whatever has happened in his past he’s learned from it. Whatever happened with that situation, I’m sure it was a long time ago, I’m sure he apologized for it.

Something similar happened a couple of months ago when ABC posted a bunch of potential contestants, before Hannah's season began. Maybe it was part of a vetting process, because fans dragged a guy named Matt D., breaking out all kinds of dating receipts. Whether that was a reason or not, Matt D. was ultimately not one of the final guys cast for the show.

It's possible Tyler G. will speak out on this himself, to share his other side of the story.

UPDATE: Yep, he did just that. After the episode aired, Tyler Gwozdz addressed his exit and the "totally unsubstantiated rumors posted to Reddit" in an email to Refinery29. Of his exit, he said the actual reason he left wasn't aired to respect his privacy. "This was a decision that I came to with producers, and something that I’ve come to realize what is the best decision that could’ve been made." Read his full statements.

The Bachelorette Season 15, Episode 3 was already dramatic with Hannah going to the hospital. Apparently she passed out, and we saw her briefly in the hospital, where she got fluids and then stayed in bed for her adapted one-on-one with Connor.

If you're interested in more spoilers from The Bachelorette, Reality Steve has already revealed who Hannah reportedly picks. It's not her original frontrunner, so that's interesting.

Gina Carbone

Gina grew up in Massachusetts and California in her own version of The Parent Trap. She went to three different middle schools, four high schools, and three universities -- including half a year in Perth, Western Australia. She currently lives in a small town in Maine, the kind Stephen King regularly sets terrible things in, so this may be the last you hear from her.
