Will Pretty Little Liars End After Season 7? Here's What The Creator Says

The past couple of seasons of Pretty Little Liars have been about as crazy as everything else on TV, what with characters once thought dead revealing that isn’t so, as well as the twisted reveal of “A.” The show is resetting itself with a time jump for the second half of Season 6, and it’s possible the story is in danger of drying up by the time Season 7 ends, as creator I. Marlene King sounds like she’s ready for it all to come to an end.

I think that this story when we’re back will end next year at the end of Season 7.

While that statement could be received as King vaguely saying that the particular upcoming plotline would run out by next year only to make way for a new story, King was then asked by Variety to confirm that she definitely wanted the show to be finished by the end of next season, and she said, “Correct.”

I tell ya, if the person who’s been the creative spearheader for the past five and a half years is ready to turn it in, there’s not much anyone can do to change that. Granted, ABC Family (soon to be Freeform) hasn’t officially said anything about the show’s future beyond Season 7, and they really don’t have to do that for well over a year. But I have to think that some detail-grinding conversations between King and the network will happen sooner than later. ABC Family wisely gave Pretty Little Liars a double-season pick-up last year, so fans will definitely be getting at least another 30 or so episodes before all is said and done.

This isn’t the first time that Pretty Little Liars’ impending end has been brought up, either. Last year, actress Lucy Hale came out and said Season 7 would be the last one, and King wasn’t entirely against it. But then the rumor mill flipped back around, with King and others talking about a possible Season 8 and/or some kind of a TV movie to finish of the series. I have no clue what happened between then and now, but King’s tune has changed.

Note that any possible ending to Pretty Little Liars won’t strain the relationship between King and the network. She is currently in the post-production process on a pilot called Famous in Love which stars Bella Thorne, and it’s possible that the show could get picked up to series in the near future.

What other shocks and surprises will Pretty Little Liars deliver in the second half of Season 6? Find out when the show returns to Freeform (as it will be called then) on Tuesday, January 12.
