Marvel Dropped New Avengers 2 Footage, Here's What It Showed

The Avengers: Age of Ultron is only five months away from release, meaning that Marvel will be stepping up their promotion for this film big time in the coming weeks. In October, they released the first trailer for the highly anticipated sequel, and while we have seen some additional moments in following previews, the others have mostly been rehashes of that first, glorious one. After weeks of not getting anything new, Marvel finally unveiled new footage at Samsung’s "Night With Marvel" event yesterday with a new featurette for the 2015 blockbuster.

According to IGN, the new scenes shown at the event include Ultron’s minions busting into the train during Quicksilver’s slow-motion sequence from the first trailer; Iron Man flying at the camera with Ultron-bots being thrown aside; and a Samsung building being destroyed. Hey, even if your company experiences massive property damage, that’s works efficiently as a promotional plug. Like previous previews, of the footage was recycled from the first trailer, but it did also include looks at Ultron concept art and director Joss Whedon and the actors talking about the film. Whedon specifically commented about how he always pictured Ultron whenever he thought of the Avengers, and that when he thought of getting a James Spader-like actor to play the robotic villain, he went ahead and got the real deal.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron has long been said to be much larger in scale compared to The Avengers, and with the footage we’ve seen so far that the destruction highlighted in the Samsung preview, Marvel is definitely doing a good job of getting it across that this battle with Ultron will be much more personal, and as a result, maybe even more dangerous. Anyone can raise an army and attempt to conquer Earth (with the right resources of course), but Ultron’s goal of eradicating humanity is kicking things to a new level of villainy - especially given that he was originally created as a force for good. One description I’ve frequently heard about the movie suggest it could be the The Empire Strikes Back of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and judging from this new footage, that sounds apt.

Marvel will release the next The Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer on ESPN on January 12th around 8:30 p.m. ET during the first College National Championship football game. Whether this will be primarily full of new footage or just another rehash of the first trailer peppered with several new scenes in is unclear, but it’s possible that they may include the Samsung scenes for those who weren’t at the event to see for themselves. The film will hit theaters on May 1st.
