Can Bullriding Go Beyond 8 Seconds?

We’ve complained before about direct to DVD sequels being a tad bit ridiculous. I think we’ve now passed right by ridiculous and moved on to absolutely bonkers. The newest announcement in direct to your home sequels: a sequel to 1994’s bull-riding thriller (and we use that term loosely), 8 Seconds.

The original movie chronicled the life of bull rider Lane Frost, as played by “Beverly Hills 90210” celeb Luke Perry, who was attempting to become a legitimate actor at the time. The idea is that eight seconds is the amount of time a bull rider is supposed to try and hang on to their ride. Now, Moviehole has discovered plans for a sequel from New Line.

What on earth makes anyone think a movie like 8 Seconds needs a sequel? Not only does the story not call for one (the bull riding hero died young), but the original flick was thirteen years ago. Any need for a sequel has been left far, far behind. Moviehole speculates that the film might focus on Lane Frost’s bullriding friend Tuff Hedeman, specifically because the character was played by Stephen Baldwin, who isn’t exactly an in demand actor these days. Heck, Perry is probably more on-call than Stephen Baldwin.

New Line most certainly must be crazy for this one. More news as we find it out.
