So by now most people know that Telltale Games has gone under and there won't be anymore Telltale's The Walking Dead titles after the final season wraps up. However, Skybound Entertainment wants to keep making games and bringing fans new titles based on the property, so the company is asking fans what they want to see next.
The news came via a tweet on January 24th, 2019 from over on the official The Walking Dead Twitter account, where fans were asked what kind of game they would like to see next in the widely popular series.
This comes shortly after the third episode for The Walking Dead: The Final Season was released on behalf of Telltale, courtesy of Skybound Entertainment. For those of you not in the know, since Telltale dissolved during the middle of releasing the four episode arc for the final season, Skybound Entertainment stepped in to fund and develop the remaining two episodes in the season by bringing in the staff from Telltale to finish up the season.
Obviously, with the last episode prepping to drop soon, Skybound is looking ahead at what can be done next with the series instead of waiting around while twiddling thumbs. The actual Skybound Games account hopped into the thread to clarify that the teams are taking suggestions even beyond the currently available games and series, as noted in the tweet below.
This means that the teams are likely looking for games that aren't just retreads of what Telltale did, nor is the team looking to redo what Overkill Software and Starbreeze recently put out with Overkill's The Walking Dead.
Some fans hopped in to offer some fantastic suggestions, including a really detailed outline of how an open-world, sandbox game could work based on the AMC television series, explaining how the design would be similar to survival-simulators but structured like Red Dead Redemption 2's story chapters.
A few more people also suggested Grand Theft Auto-style open world games where you run around and attempt to survive. That would likely put it in direct competition with games like DayZ or Rust. Both games gained a lot of popularity during their early launches due to their similarity to the harsh survival reality featured in the AMC television show The Walking Dead.
A lot of people kept asking for a Season 5 of Telltale's rendition of The Walking Dead, but it's highly unlikely that Skybound will go that route, especially since there was a massive trail-off in the sales for Telltale after the first season of The Walking Dead. Repeating that business move again would likely end in failure, unless the company decided to do something wildly different with the way the story and gameplay unfolded.
People are still lobbing suggestions at Skybound for a new game, so there's still time to slip in an idea about what sort of genre or style of game the company can tackle next. Heck, maybe the studio will go in a completely different direction and make a pinball game based on the zombie property?
