The First Spider-Man Spinoff Movie Could Go In This Direction

Spider-Man

Sony and Marvel may have teamed up to bring Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but the former studio is still keen on releasing spinoffs connected to the popular Web-Slinger. A few months ago, it was reported that the long-gestating Venom spinoff was being worked on again, giving the symbiote monster a solo cinematic adventure supposedly unconnected to what's happening with Spidey. However, a new rumor suggests that Sony may be looking to release a movie starring antihero Silver Sable before that.

During today's episode of Meet the Movie Press (via ComicBookMovie), host Jeff Sneider mentioned how he's heard that Sony has been taking with The Iron Lady writer Abi Morgan about possibly penning a Silver Sable movie. No other details were provided about this project, including how far along they are in the creative process. Back when Sony was still planning on creating a Spider-Man cinematic universe based around the Andrew Garfield-led series, there were reports about a female-centered spinoff movie in the works. Whether this Silver Sable movie is that same spinoff or something different, she's someone who has had enough adventures over the years that she could definitely help expand Spider-Man's corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Silver Sable

Silver Sable was introduced in 1985's The Amazing Spider-Man #265. Hailing from the fictional European country Symkaria, she is a mercenary who hunts down criminals across the world with her team, the Wild Pack. While there have been instances where she's had to battle other superheroes, she's mostly been one of Spider-Man's allies over the years. She doesn't boast any powers, but is a skilled combatant, gymnast and weapons expert. Outside of the comics, her appearances include Spider-Man: The New Animated Series, The Spectacular Spider-Man, the Ultimate Spider-Man video game and Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions.

There's not enough information yet on whether this Silver Sable movie will actually move forward or is something that's simply being mulled over. However, in terms of build a Spider-Man-centric big screen world, using Silver Sable would be a way to feature an important protagonist who isn't gifted with spider-related abilities. It's also important to note that Sony president Tom Rothman recently said that while Sony has the "ultimate authority" over the Spider-Man related content, they're letting Marvel take the creative lead on these movies. Assuming that statement is also applicable to the spinoffs, that means that Silver Sable would have the potential to appear in other MCU installments if needed.

We'll keep you updated on there's any movement on a Silver Sable movie, but in the meantime, let us know if you'd like to see her lead a cinematic adventure in the comments below.
