Watch 'Crestfallen' Jeff Goldblum Go Full Jeff Goldblum Over The MCU Spider-Man News

The Grandmaster in Thor: Ragnarok

Sony and Disney’s joint custody arrangement to share Spider-Man and allow the beloved character to be a part of the MCU came to an abrupt and surprising end last week, and Marvel fans are still processing what it means for the future of the webslinger and the shared film universe of which he was a part. In the wake of the news, we’ve heard from lots of Marvel Cinematic Universe luminaries, but no one has a way with words quite like Jeff Goldblum. You can watch the ‘crestfallen’ Thor: Ragnarok star go full Jeff Goldblum over the Spider-Man news in the video below:

First off, good on Variety for asking Jeff Goldblum his thoughts about Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in light of the breakup news, because his response here is just fantastic and classic Jeff Goldblum. As she begins asking the actor about the situation, he acts with rapt attention, eager to know what’s going on. When she mentions the nasty divorce happening, his eyes get wide and he blurts out ‘No;’ a sentiment we all share.

Jeff Goldblum says that he is ‘crestfallen’ to hear about this, an excellent and appropriate adjective and exactly the kind of thing you'd imagine Goldblum would say. That feeling of despondence was a bit premature though, because after expressing his dismay, he then asked what exactly was going on.

As the interviewer describes the Sony and Disney dispute over Spider-Man, Jeff Goldblum delivers some hilarious facial expressions and reactions, conveying pure confusion over the whole thing. Clearly the Grandmaster hasn’t been as invested in this situation as the fans, and even after having it explained to him he admits his ignorance over the matter.

The actor and star of The World According to Jeff Goldblum says that it’s all Greek to him, and then delivers a marvelous bit of rambling. I’d transcribe it, but don’t have enough confidence in my abilities to operate at his wavelength and thus doubt I would be able to translate properly.

Jeff Goldblum perhaps doesn’t really care as much as his emotional display suggests, but he nevertheless offers a message of optimism, expressing a belief that it will all work out while wishing the parties good luck. Life finds a way, and perhaps with his blessing Sony, Disney and Spider-Man will too.

This wasn't the only on-going situation that Jeff Goldblum was asked about on the D23 Expo red carpet, either. As it turns out, he is a fan of one particular Disney princess, and he offered up an audition for her upcoming live-action remake, which you can check out below:

The quirky actor offers up a solid audition here for Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid by delivering a goofy and giddy rendition of “Part Of Your World.” He makes it clear that not only does he want to be a part of the live-action Little Mermaid from director Rob Marshall, he wants the lead role of Ariel. Basically, he wants to play his favorite Disney princess.

There’s a sameness to the Disney live-action remakes, but I’ve got to say, if we could get Disney movies as one-man shows with Jeff Goldblum playing every character I’d be onboard immediately. Sadly, that won’t be possible because the lead role of Ariel has already gone to actress Halle Bailey. Maybe he could play a different part in that movie, though, or in another live-action Disney remake. He’d be a fun Merlin in The Sword in the Stone.

Not one to be bitter for missing out on a part, Jeff Goldblum offered up his praise of the actress that he had never heard of until that very moment, hilariously offering to wash her feet and then, just to make things weirder, drink her footbath water. Never change, Jeff Goldblum.

You can see Jeff Goldblum in The World According to Jeff Goldblum, streaming on Disney+ at launch on November 12. Check out our premiere guide to see what’s headed to the big screen and stay tuned to CinemaBlend for the latest movie news.
