Sounds Like Disney+'s Cassian Andor Series Will Introduce Star Wars Characters Cut From The Movies

The untitled Cassian Andor series was announced back in 2018, with the solo Star Wars prequel series set to see the return of Diego Luna as the beloved character from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The downside is that there has been little information about the series since then and what the plot will be is anyone’s guess at this point. However, visual effects artist Neal Scanlan recently dropped a few nuggets about the Disney+ series and it sounds like it will introduce characters who were cut from the Star Wars movies.

When it comes to Star Wars movies, there’s probably a lot that ends up on the cutting room floor. That is, if it’s fortunate enough to make it into the movie at all, especially given the long pre-production process. Having worked on all of the live-action Star Wars films under Disney, Neal Scanlan would know that better than most. Speaking with MovieWeb, Scanlan revealed that he’s currently working on the Cassian Andor series and that the show will likely include previously unused characters. Here’s what he had to say:

What is fun about this is, in many ways, I don't think it feels different than working on a movie. It certainly doesn't feel like we are making any compromises. It's the same creative conditions in every department to do what we can do. We also have this backlog of characters. A lot of the characters that we built for all of the films either didn't make it to the final cut, because that's just the way that the film process happens, or that they are seen so momentarily that there is this wonderful second opportunity to bring back some of the characters that we've made and bring them to this new storyline in a more, shall we say, integrated way.

That sounds incredibly interesting. I’d wager that there are a lot of characters who never made it onscreen or minor characters who went unnoticed. The idea to reintroduce these characters into the world of Star Wars sounds promising. It’s also a great way to update the work already done without having to start from scratch. What’s more, Neal Scanlan expressed his excitement for the project and assured fans that the Cassian Andor series being made for TV wouldn’t affect its standards. In his words:

I think it's going to be tremendous. I find that it's a second opportunity for everything that we've made, plus the opportunity of moving TV along, in a sense, at what will not at all be diminished as far as the level of quality, the level of things that we are going to try and achieve.

The untitled Cassian Andor series does not yet have a scheduled release date, but stay tuned to CinemaBlend for updates. In the meantime, be sure to check out our midseason schedule for more on what to watch.
