Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is back and the final season has been packed with a lot of exciting things for longtime fans. After all, there have been promises the series will avoid treading the path of another series’ controversial outcome. And if that isn't enough great news, Clark Gregg is teasing even more surprises to come.

While fans have already gotten to see some major MCU tie-ins within the first two episodes, they also have that Agent Carter crossover, which will begin with next week's episode. After some early speculation, it was eventually confirmed that Enver Gjokaj would appear on the final season of S.H.I.E.L.D., reprising his role as Daniel Sousa. Agent Carter fans will recall that Sousa was Peggy Carter’s love interest in the series.

Aside from the Agent Carter connection, Clark Gregg indicates there are more surprises where that came from. Asked what it was like to have some blasts from the past return, Gregg said:

It wouldn’t have been a good final season unless Patton [Oswalt] was there. He was the secret weapon that showed up and made our show better, all the time, like he does, and is a pleasure to be around. And I loved Agent Carter, so I was really excited to have Enver [Gjokaj] around, playing Agent Sousa. We loved him. It was great to have him around. And there are a few other surprises and interesting versions of past people. That’s all I’m gonna say.

Clark Gregg always knows how to put out a great tease, and his comments to Collider were no different. It sounds like Patton Oswalt, and Agent Carter’s Enver Gjokaj are far from the only ones making their way back for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s final season. And with the time-traveling drama surrounding this new season, it definitely makes sense that this would be the case.

One of the more interesting aspects of Clark Gregg's comments is his mention of seeing new versions of past people. Could this mean we could see some younger versions of some major MCU characters? There's always a chance we could see a young Howard Stark (played by Dominic Cooper) come into the picture again. Or maybe we'll see some version of S.H.I.E.L.D. traitor Grant Ward. The possibilities are endless.

Time will tell who ends up popping up and, since fans aren't far into Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s final season, there's plenty of time for some big names to cross paths with our favorite agents. And hopefully, the big questions that have been raised so far will be answered.

Tune into to see what other surprise appearances occur when new episodes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s final season air Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET on ABC as one of this summer’s premieres. You can currently stream past seasons on Netflix alongside a lot of new 2020 content.
