Disney+’s WandaVision Has Screened, Here’s What Critics Are Saying

Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff and Paul Bettany as Vision in WandaVision (2021)

Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have been waiting anxiously for a taste of new content, and they’ll get it relatively soon with the release of Disney+’s WandaVision. As a homage to sitcoms of different eras, the “bonkers” show is primed to be unlike anything Marvel Studios has ever produced. So in a way, it can definitely be viewed as a big swing for the company. Now, critics have screened the first three episodes of the show, and they’ve taken to the internet to share their thoughts.

So far, WandaVision is receiving high praise from critics from various outlets. CinemaBlend’s own Sean O’Connell was floored by what he’s seen of the show, and he praised the series for the way it recreates sitcom motifs:

Marvel put a lot of effort into getting the sitcom elements of WandaVision to work, even going as far as to consult TV legend Dick Van Dyke for guidance. Well, it seems to be paying off, as IndieWire’s Kristen Lopez also praised the show for its classic recreations. She also highlighted Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany’s performances:

Many fans have been particularly excited for Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch to take center stage and further explore the range of her abilities. Based on the reaction of ET’s Ash Crossan, fans of Ms. Maximoff are going to enjoy what they see:

It was pretty much a foregone conclusion that WandaVision would be vastly different from other MCU projects, but this doesn’t seem to be putting critics off at all. In fact, many like Slashfilm’s Peter Sciretta applauded it for that very reason and made note of its commitment to its format:

Little details are important, especially when it comes to a high-profile production like WandaVision. Fox 5 reporter and ReelBlend co-host Kevin McCarthy was among those who praised the show for paying adding in small, but vital, components:

Admittedly, change in style may take some time for some of the MCU faithful to adjust to. Collider’s Perri Nemiroff pointed this out but also mentioned that the creative change definitely seems to be worth it:

Marvel Studios has faced down pressure before but, with this being the company’s first TV show (and the first piece of MCU content in over a year and a half), the expectations were high. But these early reactions seem to indicate that Wanda and Vision’s solo outing lives up to the hype so far.

Excitement levels are sure to even higher now (if that’s even possible), as the inaugural show in Marvel’s slate of TV content is off to a strong start. It’ll be interesting to see how fans react to the show when it premieres. But one thing that’s for sure is that just about every fan will be geared up and ready when WandaVision has its two-episode premiere on Friday, January 15 on Disney+.
