Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 Is Happening, Here’s When It’s Hitting Theaters

Spider-Man

It hasn't even been a full 24 hours since the Spider-Man: Homecoming teaser trailer premiered, but folks, whether they're hardcore comic book fans or casual moviegoers, are still talking about the first publicly-released look at the Web-Slinger's first MCU solo adventure. Combined with the positive reception Tom Holland's Peter Parker received in Captain America: Civil War back in May, it's safe to say this iteration of Spidey has a bright future ahead of him. The studio bigwigs are so confident, in fact, that they've already scheduled a Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel for release in 2019.

According to Deadline, Columbia Pictures has given Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 the Friday, July 5, 2019 release date. Bad Boys IV was originally supposed to come out two days earlier, but instead of being further delayed, that blockbuster is instead moving to May 24, 2019, helping to kick off that Memorial Day weekend. So far Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 is the only movie slated for the 2019 Independence Day weekend, but that will surely change in the near future. Currently the only other blockbuster slated for July 2019 is Indiana Jones 5, which will swing its whip on the 19th.

In an age where cinematic franchises are being planned before the first movie has had enough time to breathe in theaters or even be released, it's not too surprising that Spider-Man: Homecoming already has a sequel in the works. Over 50 years after his comic book debut, the Web-Head remains one of the most popular superheroes in pop culture, and has already led two previous movie series. Plus, Tom Holland was one of the shining players in Captain America: Civil War, even though his screen time was limited compared to the other major players. His Peter Parker is clearly being set up as a major MCU player, so it would have been weird if a sequel wasn't ordered. All this being said, since Spider-Man: Homecoming is still seven months away from release, it's hard to get excited about a sequel when we haven't even chewed on the first movie. Once we see Spider-Man battle Vulture and other baddies next summer, then a sequel will sound more appealing.

Because Sony and Marvel are now working together on Spider-Man, this also means that Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 is currently the last MCU movie to be released in 2019, preceded by Captain Marvel in March and Avengers 4 in May. As for what the sequel is about, it will be a long time before the public is privy to that information, though Tom Holland has already discussed certain elements (including the villain) with Marvel.

While Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 is still three years away, its predecessor swings into theaters on July 7, 2017.
