Star Wars: The Last Jedi Reshoots May Affect Carrie Fisher’s Role In The Sequel

Carrie Fisher as General Leia in Star Wars: The Force Awakens

While Star Wars: The Force Awakens left us with many open questions, the death of Carrie Fisher has overshadowed all of them. The biggest question we want answered now, is what's going to happen to General Leia? With Star Wars: The Last Jedi apparently getting ready for some reshoots we're wondering what they might have planned for Carrie Fisher's character. One YouTuber has apparently heard that some of Fisher's scenes are being cut, possibly with an eye to changing up the role in order to give the actress a proper send-off.

It has been rumored that some of Carrie Fisher's major scenes from Episode VIII will be cut from the film. I think that what they're going to be doing is modifying the scenes perhaps to make them all the more special and... bring an interesting tribute to her as a person. Now we do know this approach was used for Furious 7 with Paul Walker. I think they could do something similar for Carrier Fisher playing General Leia and they could make the scene... have a larger impact on the film and that is what these reshoots could be for. That's my belief. It could be for little snippets here and there to make other scenes more detailed.

First and foremost, the above rumor should be taken with a grain of salt. Possibly an entire glass of sea water. Dunk yourself in a bathtub full of Epsom is what I'm saying. While Mike Zeroh isn't always off the mark with his information, we never know exactly where it comes from, so we need to give it a wide berth.

Having said all that, there's a very good chance that Carrie Fisher's role in Star Wars: The Last Jedi will see changes during any reshoots. We know that Carrie Fisher had completed all of her scenes for Episode VIII but whatever they were, one assumes that they also set up future scenes for Star Wars: Episode IX. Since we know those scenes won't be happening, it's certainly possible that scenes in The Last Jedi could be removed if they won't see a payoff before the end of the trilogy.

Lucasfilm has made it plain that they have no plans to use CGI to bring General Leia into Star Wars: Episode IX. If that's the case, then it would seem that we will not see Leia at all in that film. This would mean either that Leia will be removed from the story entirely at some point in The Last Jedi or, possibly, that all of her action will take place off screen, that we'll never see her, but we will see the results of what she's done. Either course feels wrong, but regardless something needs to be done.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be a massive fan farewell to Carrie Fisher, this will happen without needing to edit scenes to give her a dramatic exit. Still, it seems some sort of exit is in order. Let us know how you think The Last Jedi should change up Leia's role in the comments below.
