Is Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 5 Happening? Here's The Latest

agents of shield season 4

Marvel's big break onto the small screen in primetime came back in 2013 with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Although the show got off to a strong start, ratings have dwindled in the years since. Now, with Season 4 almost at an end, fans are waiting for news of whether we can look forward to a Season 5 or start mourning the series finale. Well, ABC hasn't yet made an official announcement about S.H.I.E.L.D.'s future, but there's still reason to have hope.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s status as a marketing platform for Marvel on broadcast television makes it a valuable commodity for ABC, and Deadline reports that a renewal for Season 5 is quite likely. The end might be nigh for some of the agents if they don't take out A.I.D.A. as soon as possible, but the show will probably come back in the fall. As somebody who has been on the edge of my seat all throughout the framework arc of Season 4, I've been dying to hear some encouraging news about more to come. This will definitely help me get through whatever A.I.D.A. has in store next.

Of course, an official announcement from ABC would be much better, but we shouldn't be discouraged by the lack of confirmation. ABC hasn't officially renewed many of its series at all. In fact, the only four shows that have been renewed are Grey's Anatomy, Scandal, How To Get Away With Murder, and The Middle. With Designated Survivor practically a sure thing and the odds looking pretty good for Once Upon a Time, I'd say that we shouldn't be too upset by the lack of a renewal order for S.H.I.E.L.D.

As a longtime fan of S.H.I.E.L.D., I'll be the first to admit that it has gone through some rough patches that have been hard to watch over the years, but Season 4 has been pretty stellar overall. Breaking the season up into three separate arcs has done wonders for the storytelling, and the digital framework world has allowed the show to both bring back long-gone characters and throw our agents for some serious loops. All things considered, a cancellation now would be a downright TV tragedy. It's a different brand of comic TV show than can be found anywhere else on the small screen, Marvel or DC, and fans deserve at least one more season.
