There's a not-so-secret running theme among the Kingdom Hearts community that even some of the most diehard fans don't entirely know what's going on with the story. There are hours upon hours worth of video footage spread across the great expanse of YouTube, attempting to breakdown the characters and the story and explain what's happening within the crossover world between Square Enix's properties and Disney's movies. But there might be a better way of going about understanding the complex and multi-layered world of Kingdom Hearts. Square Enix decided to put together a brand new (and hopefully final) compilation of stories that will help flesh out and explain the story of the franchise ahead of the release of Kingdom Hearts III in early January of 2019 for the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4.
Polygon is reporting that the new game and the final compilation before Kingdom Hearts III drops is called Kingdom Hearts: The Story So Far and it will release a lot sooner than you might have been expecting. You can look to grab a copy of the project starting October 30th at the end of the month.
So what makes this outing any different from all the other compilation packs that have been released for the game so far? Well, for one thing it contains all of the important games in the series, spanning 12 games. It's a compilation that focuses on the story so far and all of the relevant bits that have culminated in the events that will transpire in Kingdom Hearts III.
The compilation pack is $39.99 and it features all of the following games in a single pack:
KINGDOM HEARTS HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX
KINGDOM HEARTS FINAL MIX
KINGDOM HEARTS Re:Chain of Memories
KINGDOM HEARTS 358/2 Days (HD Remastered cinematics)
KINGDOM HEARTS II FINAL MIX
KINGDOM HEARTS Birth by Sleep Final MIX
KINGDOM HEARTS Re:coded (HD Remastered cinematics)
KINGDOM HEARTS HD 2.8 FINAL CHAPTER PROLOGUE
KINGDOM HEARTS Dream Drop Distance HD
KINGDOM HEARTS 0.2 Birth by Sleep --A fragmentary passage--
KINGDOM HEARTS ? Back Cover (movie)
That's a whole lot of Kingdom Hearts.
I do wonder if gamers will be able to actually play through all of the games before Kingdom Hearts III launches. It may be several months before the next game comes out, but each of those games are going to run you at least two dozen hours or so each. That means you'll likely either have to indulge in nothing but Kingdom Hearts all day, everyday leading up to the release of the canonical "third" game in the series. Or maybe you'll just have to play the games off and on while also playing Kingdom Hearts III to get the full story.
In a way, if you've never played any of the games in the series before, it wouldn't be a bad idea to start with Kingdom Hearts: The Story So Far just because it contains every important game in the series released over the years. So it will help catch you up real quick and give you an opportunity to prep for Kingdom Hearts III's release.
