Blizzard is releasing Patch 2.0.1 for Diablo 3 today. The update adds new features and lays the groundwork for the Reaper of Souls expansion pack.
We knew that Patch 2.0.1's release was close. Blizzard brought down the public test servers for the patch yesterday and said that the update would go live within the next two weeks. However, D3 producer Alex Mayberry surprised everyone last night by revealing that it would arrive Tuesday:
Lest you think it was a mistake on Mayberry's part, director Josh Mosqueira provided confirmation of his own later in the evening:
While the patch provides important features, you'll have to wait for Reaper of Souls's launch next month for actual gameplay content. The expansion unlocks Act 5 of the campaign, which will take players to Westmarch and the Pandemonium Fortress. The new Crusader class combines heavy armor and shields with holy magic to devastating effect. A new Adventure Mode gives the game some additional replayability by allowing players to tackle randomized bounties or dungeons.
Blizzard revealed today that if you pre-purchase Reaper of Souls or redeem your game key by March 31st, you'll get access to two special bonuses. The first is a cosmetic item for D3 called Wings of Valor. This item gives your character archangel wings when equipped. The Wings of Valor will be sent out to all of your existing and new D3 characters starting on March 20th.
The other bonus is a character unlock for Heroes of the Storm, the MOBA in development at Blizzard. In Heroes, characters from Blizzard's major franchises come together in team-based battles. Buying Reaper of Souls early will give you launch access to D3's Valla the Demon Hunter. This suggests that HoTS will have a League of Legends-like business model, with players using a free rotation of characters or spending money to unlock certain characters permanently.
Reaper of Souls will launch on March 25th worldwide on PC and Mac. The expansion will also be included in the PS4 version of the game, which is currently undated.
