ZeniMax Online Studios has updated the official Elder Scrolls Online website with a new story. This first story details the background of Jorunn the Skald-King, the ruler of the Ebonheart Pact.
The Ebonheart Pact is one of three player factions in ESO. The Pact rules over Skyrim, Morrowind and Black Marsh. Their numbers are composed of the Dunmer, Argonians, and Nords. That seems like a pretty random mix of races but perhaps their grouping will seem more logical as additional information is revealed.
The words "short story" might not adequately describe the tale of Jorunn. It's more of a short summary of his history. The story is presented like a tome you'd pick up in single-player RPG's like Skyrim and is of comparable length. Displaying the story like that is just another subtle way that ZeniMax is trying to emphasize the connections between their MMO and the single-player adventures by Bethesda.
ESO takes place hundreds of years before the events of the other Elder Scrolls games. This should give ZeniMax a lot of freedom in designing the storylines. Don't expect a completely blank slate, though. They're promising that some villains from the single-player RPG's will make an appearance.
The developers intend to release stories featuring the leaders of the Aldmeri Dominion and Daggerfall Covenant in the future. They've got plenty of time to do so, as ESO won't be out until late 2013.
