Blizzard will launch the first official season of Ranked Play for Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft on April 1st. This season will give players the opportunity to win new items.
Season 1 players will be able to earn a couple of the alternate card backs teased by Blizzard last month. These backs replace the usual graphics for the opposite side of your cards, giving your collection a little more flair and prestige. That extra bit of status should be enough incentive for Hearthstone players to pour even more hours into ranked play.
The first card back up for grabs is Pandaria-themed, with a red background and gold trim. You can earn this reward by progressing from Rank 25 to Rank 20 by the end of April. You'll receive the card back once Season 1 has concluded.
Getting from 25 to 20 should be a fairly easy task. At that level, your rank doesn't decrease through losses. Plus, you might have a head-start on the grind to 20 based on your performance in Test Season 4.
"Don’t forget—the further you move up the Ranked Play ladder, the more bonus stars you’ll receive next season," Blizzard community manager Zeriyah says on Battle.net. "In Ranked Play Season 1, you’ll receive bonus stars based on your performance from Test Season 4—one bonus star per rank you attained."
The other reward up for grabs in Season 1 is for hitting Rank 0, or Legendary. Legendary Players will get their own exclusive back with a stone border and amber center. Rank 0's not an easy goal to achieve so this should prove to be a very rare item.
Additionally, Blizzard says that the top Legend players will be invited to a tournament later in the year to determine the best player in the world. These invitations will be sent out based on your performance on each Ranked Play Season. Blizzard will announce more details on this tournament in the future.
Since Hearthstone launched earlier in the month, players have been able to earn Golden Heroes as well. These are special versions of Hero cards with new animations and gold borders. You have to win 500 Ranked Play matches with a specific character in order to unlock that card.
Hearthstone players can even get an item for fellow Blizzard game World of Warcraft. By winning three matches in Ranked or Arena mode, you'll unlock a "Hearthsteed" mount for your WoW account. The Hearthsteed is a winged horse with a red or blue glow, depending on your character's faction.
