Infinite Game Publishing and Piranha Games have recently announced that a free-to-play version of the popular giant-mech franchise will be arriving for PC gamers in late 2012. The customization-heavy MMO will feature many of the classic Battlemechs and their iconic weaponry, giving gamers the opportunity to show off their team tactics and mech-warring skills on the ultimate stage of combat.

Just like the original Battlemech, players will be able to form groups, upgrade their mech, strengthen their clan, go head-to-head with other players or battle it out in Conquest matches.

Russ Bullock, co-founder of Piranha Games commented in the press release, saying…
“We’re excited to lead the MechWarrior franchise online for fans of the series,” … “We’re proud to partner with Infinite Game Publishing, and are thankful for the fans of the MechWarrior series that have been so patient for the next MechWarrior game to arrive. Infinite Game is a partner who understands both the world of games publishing and the crucial technical needs of today’s AAA online gaming experiences. Together we are bringing fans epic next-generation Mech combat online in 2012.”

The game will enable players to join one of the five great Mech houses and battle for interplanetary control for money, skills and recognition. The game’s setup sounds very similar to the highly underrated BattleSwarm: Field of Honor.
