Sony Online Entertainment has announced that they're partnering with Major League Gaming to turn their MMO shooter PlanetSide 2 into an eSports. The two companies will be working closely together over the next year in order to make that goal a reality.
PlanetSide 2 is a planet-wide battle between three factions. These factions fight 24/7 for control of three different continents. Each continent supports up to 2000 players, resulting in some massive battles. Players can customize their equipment to fulfill a variety of roles on the battlefield. They can ride into battle in air or land vehicles that can also be customized.
The game is designed around enormous maps and huge numbers of players. The wide scope of the game seems like it would make it an awkward fit for eSports. However, the PlanetSide 2 development team will work with MLG to make sure that the game is ideal for competitive gaming. No specifics were provided on how they're going to shape the game for eSports.
SOE and MLG will start promoting the game together right away. Original programming based on PlanetSide 2 will air on MLG's website as well as their Twitch TV page. Further details will be announced soon. PlanetSide 2 players will be able to compete through the MLG GameBattles site soon. PlanetSide 2 will be on playable at the MLG Winter Championship in Dallas this March.
PlanetSide 2 launched in November for the PC. The MMO shooter is free to download and play. The game is financed through optional purchases of unlocks and customization items for real-world money.
