Skyforge Open Beta Launches This Month

Allods Team and Obsidian Entertainment's Skyforge is set to enter open beta on July 16th. The game is an action-oriented MMORPG where players take on the role of an immortal in the world of Aelion. The launch trailer gives you a taste of what to expect from the game. Check it out.

The game takes combat inspiration from games like TERA and Blade and Soul, where players will have a lot of freedom in how they approach the combat in the game. Players will be able to dole out plenty of damage to opponents across multiple character classes, including 13 different character archetypes to switch between.

Unlike some other games out there, players will be able to fully customize their character in how they look and how they play in-game by switching character classes on the fly. If you want to dish out massive damage there are a wide variety of classes, ranging from Necromancers and Witches, to Archers and Berserkers. Traditional tanks are also present in the form of Paladins and Knights.

Character classes like Gunners, Crymancers and Kinetics also help flesh out the list, along with support roles such as the Alchemist and Lightbinder. The Alchemist kind of look like Doc Octopus from Spider-Man.... the Necromancers also look like the Arisen from Astrum Nival's Allods Online.

According to the FAQ on the main website, there are no direct healer classes available, but the support roles do offer healing mechanics. I imagine that there will be a strong focus on skill-based gameplay, which could be a real benefit to the appeal of the game if it's similar to Vindictus or Raiderz, where players will have to employ a lot of skill and pay close attention to what's happening on the screen as opposed to just tab-targeting and spamming between the '1' and '9' keys on the keyboard.

I haven't been following the development much of Skyforge and it hasn't been talked about much outside of the core community that has been following the game. The general impression from the YouTube page was that the game could be interesting but that the MMORPG genre has long ago jumped the shark. At this point it's just a husk of what a lot of people expect from the concept.

Now this isn't to say that Skyforge won't be a good game. It definitely has a striking visual tone and if the combat is as solid as the developers make it seem, then it could retain a strong community based around the combat mechanics alone, which was key for games like Dragon Nest and Lost Saga.
