Square Enix and Tri-Ace have been sprinkling gamers with a little bit of this and a little bit of that when it comes to media assets and news for Star Ocean: Integrity And Faithlessness. The latest news on the JRPG is that the title will arrive in the West starting June 28.
Game Informer picked up the news with the announcement of the Day One Edition, which is available for pre-order right now. What do you get in the Day One Edition? Well, it's like any of the standard collector's editions out there for most recognized or well known games.
You get the base Star Ocean: Integrity And Faithlessness physical copy for the PlayStation 4. You also receive exclusive in-game DLC, many of which buff the player characters or grants them an advantage during combat. For instance, you get the Ring of the Valkries, which increases the character's attack power, intelligence and critical attacks. The Gold Bunny Statue increases the experience earned. A Bushybrume Cincture reduces the amount of MP used. A Wristlet of the Stars reduces the amount of damage the player character takes, and the Secret of the Sthalian Tome increases the amount of HP that's healed per character.
The Day One Edition also includes customizable battle music featuring tracks from the Valkyrie Profile game series.
It's not really the most impressive of pre-order bonuses, but as mentioned above, it's standard fare these days for most highly anticipated games.
The real hook for a lot of gamers is that they're just excited a new Star Ocean title is on the way. It's always been one of Square's more niche game series but it kind of fell by the wayside after Star Ocean: The Last Hope came out for the Xbox 360 and PS3 back in 2009 to middling reviews from users and less-than-enthusiastic responses from the community.
Square let the franchise sit on the back burner for a while, building up some hype and reinventing an approach to storytelling and gameplay mechanics that are aimed at winning back the trust and interest from the core fans.
One thing that's interesting is that for the Western release of Star Ocean: Integrity And Faithlessness Square is only listing the game for release on the PlayStation 4. In Japan the game will be available for the PS3 and PS4. It's possible that after the game releases on the PS4 here in the West they might later release the PS3 version, but scattered releases like that rarely ever work out for the platform that gets the game later. Square is actually doing just that with Rise of the Tomb Raider on PS4, so it remains to be seen if that tactic will actually work for them later this year.
One thing gamers might notice is that this newest Star Ocean isn't even coming to the Xbox One. Square is completely forgoing Microsoft's systems this time around. So if you don't own a PS4 you won't be playing Star Ocean: Integrity And Faithlessness here in the West. If you do have a PS4, you can look for the game to drop on June 28th this summer.
