Blizzard has opened up the closed beta for StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm for droves of new players today. Select customers who pre-purchased the game will be able to jump into the test today.

The new wave of beta invites were given out to all gamers who pre-purchased Heart of the Swarm by December 18th. These players can download the beta client here. In fact, anyone can download the client - it just won't do you much good if your account isn't flagged for beta access yet.

Players who pre-order after December 18th will be invited to the test on a weekly basis. Furthermore, certain retailers (such as Amazon) are offering guaranteed beta keys to pre-order customers. Amazon says they'll email the code within five days of your order. Their offer applies to existing pre-order customers as well.

Heart of the Swarm continues the storyline of StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty. However, this time the campaign is centered on the zerg. Kerrigan must regain control of the swarm and get her revenge on Arcturus Mengsk.

Blizzard is offering three different editions of Swarm with different prices and extras. The game will launch worldwide on March 12th.
