Valve's digital games platform Steam now has a new Trading Cards service. The Steam Trading Cards allow you to gain rewards from doing something you'd be doing anyway: playing games.

While playing games that support the feature, you'll earn trading cards. Once you've collected an entire set, you can turn it into a badge. These badgets earn you exclusive items such as emoticons, profile backgrounds and coupons. You can collect the set multiple times to level up your badge and earn additional rewards.

Your badge collection is summarized with a new metric called Steam Level. Each badge you earn contributes XP toward your Level. You'll acquire extra friends list slots, profile showcases and more by leveling up. Profile showcases are customizable portions of your profile that highlight certain information, such as your favorite screenshots or your Workshop creations.

The Trading Cards feature is currently in beta. It's supported by Valve titles Dota 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Team Fortress 2, Portal 2 and Half-Life 2. The only third-party game that features Trading Cards at the moment is the open-world survival game Don't Starve.

In order to start using Steam Trading Cards, join the Steam Community group.
