A new MMORPG is currently in the works that takes a completely different approach to player relations and a social, gamer controlled persistent world. Topia Online is a 2D MMORPG that puts everything back into the hands of the player, and brings with it some interesting new features that could change the face of online interaction.
The game takes a completely different route to the way players build and manage the game world, and basically, the entire game world really is controlled by the community. Also, the thing that's really cool is that growing stronger, advancing and becoming more powerful is based on a new feature called “Influence.” I'm not going to get into the details here but you can check it out in the video below.
There's kind of a lot there...in fact, there's so much that it's hard to process where to begin talking about Topia Online and what it could mean for gaming. Overall, I love the idea of doing away with the whole grinding thing and focusing more-so on trying to get people actually interacting with each other in an MMO environment, something that other MMOs don't ever bother doing AT ALL.
I always find it odd that they're called MMOs but in order to progress and advance it promotes a lot of isolationism and nepotism, which seems so silly.
Anyway, I have no idea if what Topia Online aims to achieve will come to proper fruition but with a Kickstarter underway and a presence on Steam's Greenlight, maybe we can see what comes out of it. I wish more games took the kind of risks these smaller indie titles are taking instead of focusing on more of the same Hollywood blockbusterism.
Anyway, you can learn more about Topia Online by visiting the official Greenlight page.
