The Unity game engine has become a real force to be reckoned with this year. From dominating the crowd-funded Kickstarter scene to cleaning up with top-tier apps for Apple's iOS-powered devices, Unity has really taken hold of 2012 and squeezed every dime and dollar out of it.
GameIndustry.biz lists a number of the top apps that performed exceedingly well throughout 2012. In the general app department YouTube was number one, but the top grossing game on the iPhone was the Unity-powered Kingdoms of Camelot: Battle for the North.
David Helgason, CEO, Unity Technologies commented about the 2012 results, saying...
"It's incredibly satisfying to see Unity empowering so many developers to create such an incredible variety of creative and engaging titles," ..."We're even more proud that so many of these games are seeing such critical and financial success. Congratulations to all of the developers and thank you for making us look so good!"
Unity released the categories in which games made with the Unity engine were out front and ahead of the pack. While it would have seemed like Epic and the Unreal Engine would have taken the cake, it was actually Unity Technologies and their cost-friendly, user-friendly game engine and accompanying apps made with said engine that stood head and shoulders above the rest.
