Valve is hosting another contest for the Source Filmmaker community. They'll be giving out five Saxxy Awards for the best short videos created by gamers.
The Source Filmmaker allows the user to build movies inside the Source game engine utilized by Valve titles like Half-Life 2 and Team Fortress 2. Valve used this tool to build the "Meet The..." series of shorts for TF2. Aspiring film-makers can use any Source game assets as well as original creations in crafting their movies.
The five categories for the Saxxy's are Best Action, Best Drama, Best Comedy, Best Short and Best Overall. Valve decided to remove the Replay category this year because these videos don't fit the overall theme of story-telling as well as others do. The Original IP category was merged with all the other categories, so you can feel free to make a video that isn't based on a Valve game. If you're going to feature a non-Valve IP in the video, though, you need to be the copyright owner or have explicit permission from them.
Best Short, a new category this year, is limited to videos that are one minute or less. To be considered for the other categories, submissions must be no longer than five minutes. All entries must be rendered in Source Filmmaker, though post-production tools can be used for additional effects.
"We will be accepting submissions from 4PM November 11th through 4PM November 18th, Pacific Standard Time," Valve says in the official announcement post. "Don't wait until the last day to submit, however. We encourage you to submit early in the prior week, and then re-submit any refinements later in the week, so that if your computer dies, your power goes out or you get confused by the time zone conversion to Pacific time, you still have a version submitted."
The community voting for the contest will begin on November 18th and run until November 24th. Valve will look over the nominees chosen by the community and pick the five winners. These winners will be announced on November 26th.
All winners will unlock the Saxxy weapon for use in Team Fortress 2. The Saxxy is a "75% Australium-plated statuette of Saxton Hale set into a small plinth" that can be wielded by all classes. You can see it in action in this video:
The creator of the Best Overall video will be flown to Seattle, Washington so they can tour Valve's headquarters. During their visit, they'll also be able to meet the company's filmmakers.
