Weekly Recap: Joystiq Shuts Down And 5 Other Devastating News Items

It's the last day of January prepping for the first day of the second month of the year. January came and went like a blur, but there were plenty of devastating news items that dropped, including that Joystiq, the popular gaming news outlet, is being closed by AOL. Not only that, but AOL is also shutting down Joystiq subsidiaries WoW Insider and Massively. Fans of those popular outlets are already expressing great sorrow.

Additionally, Gearbox explains why the original Borderlands won't be appearing on the Xbox One and PS4 with the Borderlands: The Handsome Collection, and Scott Games announces that there's a Five Nights at Freddy's 3 in the works. Why Borderlands 1 Is Skipping Xbox One, PS4

It may have started some big things for Gearbox Software, but the original Borderlands isn't readily coming to the Xbox One and PS4 for this particular reason. Destiny's House of Wolves DLC has some major fixes for the game. Gearbox has plans to launch the remastered edition of the Homeworld collection this February and here's how you can get in on the beta. Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel will receive a new playable character. A parody commercial was made for Destiny's best weapon. Here are some of the top games releasing on the PlayStation this week. Check out a few popular NBA logos reimagined with Nitnendo characters. And Elder Scrolls Online is targeting 1080p and 30fps for the Xbox One and PS4.

Five Nights At Freddy's 3 Announced

You probably didn't see this coming, but there's another game inbound for Five Nights at Freddy's. The Mythbusters will take on id Software's legendary first-person shooter... Doom. Yeah, that's going to be crazy. There are a few major reasons why Destiny isn't all it's cracked up to be and we break down the six major reasons why it's boring. One of the more high-end and prestigious gaming sites appears to be biting the dust. Capcom is moving forward with Dragon's Dogma Online, an MMO version of the action-RPG from 2012. It looks like the beta date for Battlefield Hardline may have been leaked through a letter to YouTubers. Another classic fighter from Mortal Kombat will be returning to the fray this spring... and it's none other than Reptile. The Undertaker card from Hearthstone is being nerfed... and here's why. Elder Scrolls Online is taking some liberties and expanding their horizons with their brand new justice system. And Gaming Blend's Ryan Winslett gets in some game-time with the freshly released Dying Light... and it looks like so far, so good.

Xbox Live Free Games In February

One of the big highlights each month is which free games Microsoft and Sony hand out to gamers. Well, Microsoft detailed exactly what Xbox One and Xbox 360 gamers will get in February. If you own a PS Vita... check out these three features that are being removed. Dying Light takes a bit of a poke of fun at Destiny's loot cave. Sony is upgrading the PS3 and PS4's offerings by adding in some good 'ole Spotify. The Witcher 3's highest difficulty mode just might erase your saved games... if you die. Speaking of The Witcher 3, the final resolution and frame-rate have been confirmed by CD Projekt RED. Some sad news about Diablo III's PvP might make fans of the mode a bit disappointed. And here's a secret in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare's Exo-Zombie mode you might want to check out.

Barack Obama Uses Oregon Trail To Promote Healthcare

Now this is something you don't hear often... the POTUS referencing a game for healthcare. My how times have changed. A unique new title called Life is Strange has just launched on Steam and it's well worth taking a look at. Bungie is making some serious fixes to Destiny's heavy duty ammo and the Vault. Check out this new trailer for Mortal Kombat X featuring Ermac beating the living crap out of Sub-Zero. If you have Battlefield 4 and EA Access, you'll be able to get your hands on some free DLC. Nintendo has released more free content for Super Smash Bros owners and you'll want to check out the full update. EA has let loose the final beta dates for Battlefield Hardline, and Sony has revealed the free games for the month of February for PS Plus subscribers. Square Enix also has big plans for PS4 gamers with their upcoming Project Code Z.

Joystiq Officially Shutting Down

AOL has made it known that Joystiq, Massively and WOW Insider are all kaput. AMD took the opportunity to completely take the piss out of Nvidia over the GTX 970. Square Enix has a nice bundle pack of three games due for release in March, and you can see which three games will be included in the pack. Super Bowl hopefules Marshawn Lynch and Rob Gronkowski play a little bit of Mortal Kombat X on Conan. This crystal enshrined PS4 doesn't look quite as good as you would have expected, check it out for yourself. Raptr has been hacked and they're advising users to change the necessary account details, especially passwords. Code Name Steam isn't quite as big and as awesome as some gamers may have been expecting, according to GB's own Ryan Winslett.
