Blizzard has blasted out a press release today stating that there are now 11.5 million subscribers worldwide to the MMORPG World of Warcraft. How'd the game's second expansion pack, Wrath of the Lich King, sell? Four million in its first month.
As the Lich King figures come directly from Blizzard, I assume it includes digital sales through their website. The first reaction is, of course, "Wow, those are impressive sales, especially for a PC game." Still, 4 million sales means that less than half of WoW subscribers have bought the latest expansion pack so far.
Given how completely batshit some WoW players are, I guess I just assumed all 11.5 million players would swarm stores like the herds of infected from I Am Legend. Not everyone's "teh hardcorez," though. The new content added by Lich King is mostly for higher-level players so anyone who doesn't have a level 55-70 character probably won't buy it (for now).
At any rate, the expansion pack's sales are still strong after being on the market for a month. Between the holidays and the newly-instituted ten-day free trial for Lich King, I suspect we'll see many more adventurers landing on the frozen shores of Northrend.
