Upcoming Tom Holland Movies: What's Ahead For The Spider-Man Actor

Tom Holland in Spider-Man: Far From Home

There comes a certain point in an actor's career where they go from rising star to Hollywood mainstay, and in recent years, Tom Holland has made that transition, handsomely, if I do say so myself. In less than ten years, Marvel’s resident spoiler-in-chief has gone from the oldest Bennett brother in the 2012 gut-wrenching disaster film The Impossible to everyone's favorite Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War, with appearances in various other movies in between and since. And as we look forward to future Tom Holland movies, like Spider-Man: No Way Home and Uncharted, there’s a lot to be excited about.

That all being said, now is the perfect time to take a dive into Tom Holland's upcoming movies (as well as some of his recent releases and where they are streaming). And while the movie industry as a whole has been a strange place full of unknowns and other factors at play, the boy who got his start in a stage production of Billy Elliott seems to be doing just fine, all things considered.

Tom Holland in Spider-Man: Far From Home

Spider-Man: No Way Home - December 17, 2021 (Filming)

After months and several rumors (including some pretty amazing options), Spider-Man 3 will officially be called Spider-Man: No Way Home, sticking with the naming motif Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures have been going with since Tom Holland made his standalone Spidey film debut with Homecoming in 2017. One of the most highly anticipated upcoming Marvel movies for a number of reasons that may or may not be related to the possibility of multiple Spider-Men, No Way Home sounds like it’s going to be far different than anything we’ve seen from the Bronx’s iconic web-slinger.

With a number of returning villains including Electro (Jamie Foxx) and Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina) and a certain Sorcerer Supreme, Dr. Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Spider-Man: No Way Home is shaping up to be just as epic as everyone had hoped. And while we don’t know exactly what the movie is about and how certain Marvel villains and heroes will be introduced, we’ll probably see Peter Parker in a delicate situation especially after he was revealed to be Spider-Man by J. Jonah Jameson (J.K. Simmons) and framed for the drone attack in London.

Production on the latest Spider-Man movie was originally supposed to start up in July 2020, but that news came in January 2020, two months before COVID-19 shut down production of all kinds around the world. Production finally got underway in October 2020 in New York City before shifting over to Atlanta and various other locations around the world. Cameras were still rolling on Spider-Man: No Way Home as recent as March 2021. It is currently scheduled to land in theaters on December 17, 2021.

Uncharted - February 11, 2022 (Post-Production)

Shortly after Spider-Man: No Way Home is released in theaters, another long-awaited Tom Holland movie will be not far behind. A video game adaptation that has been in the works in one shape or another for years now, Uncharted will see Holland take on the role of adventurer and treasure hunter known to millions of Sony PlayStation fans as Nathan Drake. Not quite the dashing and established explorer from the game series, Holland will be playing a younger version of the character first introduced in Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, a game that Holland has said influenced his portrayal. With Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Venom) behind the camera and Mark Wahlberg playing Nathan Drake's mentor, Victor Sullivan, the movie has a lot going for it outside of its superstar lead.

Despite the all-star cast and talented director, however, the Uncharted movie has had a hard time getting off the ground. With multiple rewrites, shooting delays, and COVID-19 shutting down production shortly after it got started in March 2020, there was a stretch of time when it looked like there was a dark cloud hanging over the entire project. But the cast and crew returned in July 2020 and were finally able to knock out principal photography after all these years. It looks like the misfortune is behind us as Uncharted is now slated to premiere February 11, 2022.

The Modern Ocean - TBD (Unknown)

First announced in 2015, Shane Carruth's The Modern Ocean gives the phrase "stuck in development hell" a whole new meaning. At the time it was announced, The Modern Ocean was described as a "nautical adventure" based on the impact of international shipping on the world as well as those involved with the industry. At the time, the cast was set to include Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Chloë Grace Moretz, Daniel Radcliffe, Keanu Reeves, and Jeff Goldblum, but after that 2015 announcement, there was little to no information on the project.

Tom Holland spoke about the mysterious project in a conversation with Collider in 2016 where he described The Modern Ocean's script as the best he had ever read but that he didn't know much about any progress being made in the early states of pre-production. Writer and director Shane Carruth was later quoted by IndieWire as saying that the movie wouldn't be happening anytime soon but left the status open-ended as to whether we would see it in the future. To make the situation even more difficult to understand, Carruth tweeted out the entire 180-page script in 2020 under the Twitter account for his previous film Upstream Color.

Recently Released Tom Holland Movies

Besides his two major Sony Pictures films and the mysterious The Modern Ocean, the future is relatively unknown for Tom Holland. But if Holland were to take a break following his upcoming releases, there’s still plenty to check out from his career over the last year or so. Speaking of which…

Tom Holland in The Devil All The Time

The Devil All The Time - Released September 16, 2020

Released in September 2020, the Netflix original The Devil All the Time, which saw the Spider-Man: Far From Home star share the screen with some of the biggest names in Hollywood like Bill Skarsgård, Robert Pattinson, Sebastian Stan, Riley Keough, and Jason Clarke in a dark and twisted psychological thriller. In the Antonio Campos-directed picture, Holland portrays Arvin Russell, a young man trying to protect his family from all sorts of sinister characters including an unholy preacher (Pattinson), a corrupt sheriff (Stan), and other mysterious and evil forces that await in the shadows.

Anyone who has watched the terrifying Netflix film can vouch for it being a dark affair, one that was a major departure from the more upbeat and accessible roles that Tom Holland has become known for in recent years.

Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley in Chaos Walking

Chaos Walking - Released January 22, 2021

After years of production woes, Chaos Walking was finally released in theaters on January 22, 2021. Telling the story of Todd Hewitt (Tom Holland), a boy living in a world devastated by a pathogen that killed all women and unleashed a disease that gave everyone the ability to hear the thoughts of all living creatures, the upcoming science-fiction movie follows the young boy after he meets Viola Eade (Daisy Ridley), a mysterious woman that somehow escaped death.

You would think that a science-fiction movie starring Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley would have had no trouble getting into theaters, but the film from director Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Edge of Tomorrow) titled Chaos Walking has had quite a rough go of things since shooting initially wrapped back in November 2017. Originally scheduled for release in late 2018 or early 2019, the film underwent extensive reshoots following poor reactions at test screenings prior to its eventual release.

Tom Holland in Cherry

Cherry - Released February 26, 2021

After teaming up the Russo Brothers for a certain project, Tom Holland got back together with the directing duo for the crime drama Cherry, which was unlike anything seen in the previous two collaborations between the brothers and the Marvel star. Instead of swinging through New York City to stop Ebony Maw from stealing the Time Stone like in Avengers: Infinity War or crying over the corpse of Iron Man in Avengers: Endgame, Holland played the bank-robbing drug addict by the name of Nico Walker in Cherry. Based on the novel of the same name by the real-life Nico Walker, Cherry centers around Holland's version of the former Army medic with PTSD who turns to a life of crime and starts robbing banks to support his addiction.

The bittersweet tragedy that was Cherry, with its remarkable ending and outstanding cast, finally landed in theaters in February 2021 with its streaming debut on Apple TV+ several weeks later. And while the critical response wasn’t as resounding as the previous times Tom Holland the Russo brothers got together, Cherry remains a movie worth checking out for a number of reasons.

Stream Cherry on Apple TV+.

If the past year has taught us anything it would be to expect (and accept) anything that happens to theatrical releases of major Hollywood movies, like Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: No Way Home and Uncharted, as well as other 2021 movie premiere dates. Keep checking back for more updates because you never know what’s going to happen between now and then.
