Outlander leading man Sam Heughan celebrated his 38th birthday on April 30. He marked the occasion by engaging in some birthday shenanigans with co-star Caitriona Balfe on social media, and things got pretty silly between them as they shared photos. After Balfe posted tweet after tweet teasing Heughan in honor of his special day, Heughan posted a pic of his own that didn't show Balfe at her most dignified. Take a look:
In case you wondered how Claire got her glamorous 1960s eye makeup in Outlander, Sam Heughan's Twitter pic reveals that the makeup process was distinctly lacking in glamor. While Caitriona Balfe was sitting in the makeup chair with her eyes mascara-ed shut, Heughan was apparently wandering around shirtless. He may have been filming scenes before the big time jump, as there's no sign of the makeup used to age him up. That, or he wasn't even needed on set that day and just wanted to tease Balfe.
Of course, Caitriona Balfe earned any teasing Sam Heughan decided to send her way. She posted tweet after tweet wishing him a happy birthday/poking fun at him for all the internet to see.
That right there is Sam Heughan's head Photoshopped onto Caitriona Balfe's body from Outlander's big wedding episode back in Season 1. I must say, as dashing as Jamie was in that particular episode, he's not quite as fetching as Claire in the wedding dress, and not just because his head is oversized. Outlander should probably keep him in kilts rather than corsets! Balfe's post is worth a laugh for sure, and it wasn't the only one.
This next photo is more flattering to Sam Heughan insofar as he's seen in his own costume rather than with his head Photoshopped onto Caitriona Balfe's body. It's not the most imposing photo ever taken of Heughan in his Outlander gear, but it certainly looks like he and Balfe had fun goofing off on set. Honestly, it's good to see that they have fun working on the show given how much darkness and despair there often is in the storylines.
Caitriona Balfe also provided a look at what Jamie would look like if Sam Heughan had to sit through an intensive eye makeup routine of his own. Of course, he looks more like somebody took a black marker to his face while he was asleep rather than glamorous like 1960s Claire. Kudos to Caitriona Balfe for this one! I'm not sure if he looks more like a devil, a pirate, or a devil pirate here, it's an entertaining way for Heughan to receive birthday wishes from his leading lady.
The social media back-and-forth between the Outlander stars is especially fun given that fans are currently stuck in the middle of another hiatus between seasons. The show will return for Season 4 later this year -- complete with a new villain that will be even worse than Black Jack Randall, a devastating scene for one character, and different sex scenes -- but no premiere date has been revealed at this point.
