Surprise, A Vampire Diaries Fan Favorite Will Play A Vampire On Batwoman

The Vampire Diaries Paul Wesley Nina Dobrev Ian Somerhalder

She's baaaack. The Vampire Diaries star Kayla Ewell is returning to vampire status for Batwoman Season 1. Yes, Paul Wesley is directing one episode later this season, but first his former TVD co-star will have a juicy guest role in another. My thirst will not be satisfied until every other Vampire Diaries OG follows them to Batwoman.

Kayla Ewell famously played Vicki Donovan in The Vampire Diaries Season 1 and was the first main character to be killed on the show. Not that death ever stops anyone in this franchise. Ewell continued as a recurring or guest star for most of the show's eight-season run. Vicki and Damon's dance scene, leading up to him turning her into a vampire, was the scene that convinced Ian Somerhalder that TVD would be a hit.

Since The Vampire Diaries, Kayla Ewell has had guest roles across several shows, and a continuing arc on The CW's Roswell, New Mexico, which has a lot of crossover with The Vampire Diaries and The Originals cast. Now Ewell is set to play DC Comics villain vampire Nocturna in Batwoman Season 1, Episode 13 on February 23.

That episode is titled "Drink Me" and here's the snynopsis:

A new villain sinks her teeth into Gotham and The Hold Up opens in grand fashion. Sophie (Meagan Tandy) reluctantly requests that Batwoman (Ruby Rose) keep her distance knowing their interactions could compromise her career.

As EW noted, in the world of The CW's Batwoman, Nocturna preys on the beautiful people of Gotham to sustain her need for human blood, caused by a rare disease. (Like Jared Leto in Morbius.) In one DC Comics storyline, Nocturna became one of Bruce Wayne/Batman's love interests. She was also a love interest for Kate at one point. We'll have to wait and see what havoc she wreaks on Batwoman, but here's a glimpse of Kayla Ewell in the role from the actress herself:

Love it! Kayla Ewell will appear in Batwoman Season 1, Episode 13, which -- unfortunately -- is not the episode Paul Wesley is directing. He is directing Episode 17. Wesley also directed an episode of The Vampire Diaries and The Originals' joint spinoff, Legacies. Vicki Donovan's brother Matt Donovan hasn't been seen in Legacies Season 2 yet, but we did learn he got his wish of becoming mayor of Mystic Falls. Ian Somerhalder said he'd be willing to direct an episode of Legacies too. In the meantime, Somerhalder is still trying to get V Wars Season 2 happening on Netflix. That too is a vampire show, but this time he does not play a vampire.

When Kayla Ewell is not busy returning to her vampire roots, she's busy as a relatively new mom and also co-host of the Directionally Challenged podcast with Vampire Diaries buddy Candice King. Legacies fans keep hoping King will bring TVD and The Originals character Caroline Forbes to Legacies, but it has not happened yet. (Uncle Kai just showed up, though.) Ewell and King seem very close and they also celebrated New Year's together with TVD star Nina Dobrev.

Last year, The Vampire Diaries celebrated its 10th anniversary and it's always great to see more stars in other projects -- or just hanging out together. Now TVD fans have two big reasons to keep up with Batwoman -- Paul Wesley for directing and Kayla Ewell as the sinister Nocturna. In the meantime, re-watch that Damon and Vicki dance scene leading up to her first big vampire transformation:

Batwoman Season 1 first returns with Episode 12 on Sunday, February 16 at 8 p.m. on The CW.

Gina Carbone

Gina grew up in Massachusetts and California in her own version of The Parent Trap. She went to three different middle schools, four high schools, and three universities -- including half a year in Perth, Western Australia. She currently lives in a small town in Maine, the kind Stephen King regularly sets terrible things in, so this may be the last you hear from her.
