Snowpiercer's long-awaited and long-delayed first season is in the books, and after that wild ending, fans may be eager to learn what's in store for the already confirmed Season 2. Luckily, CinemaBlend got some key info about the show's future from showrunner Graeme Manson and actor Steven Ogg, and TNT was kind enough to throw everyone a bone with an early look at the mostly filmed second season, which provided visual confirmation that Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings vet Sean Bean will be part of the action.
As for who Sean Bean will be playing, it's looking very much like Melanie's worst fears are coming true: Mr. Wilford did not die when the Snowpiercer left him behind. Instead, he apparently joined another train that has now successfully latched on with the Snowpiercer. Yes, Ruth's dream has come true in that Mr. Wilford has seemingly returned, though it remains to be seen what his arrival will mean for the rest of the train. Will he adhere to the order that was just established by Layton and Melanie, or will he try to shake things up even more and put Tailees and Third well below the rest once more?
That's a mystery we'll continue to ponder during the rest of 2020, though I did speak to Snowpiercer showrunner Graeme Manson about which already introduced characters will get more to do in Season 2. Manson revealed that some characters who weren't seen much during Season 1 will indeed get more screen time and, at least in some cases, become a larger part of the story. In Manson's words:
I'd say Pike (Steven Ogg) and certainly Roche, Mike O'Malley's character. Fans can have a lot to look forward to in terms of those storylines. Also Osweiler and LJ, we have a little piece of something going on between those two characters for next year as well.
With Nolan Grey and the Jackboots gone, Roche has inherited the top security position on Snowpiercer as head of the Brakemen. We can only speculate how Roche's story will build up in Season 2, though I would imagine there will be suspicions about whether he'll be loyal to the order established by Layton and Melanie, or if he'll choose to side with the newly arrived Mr. Wilford.
As far as LJ and Osweiller are concerned, I can't think of a worse pairing to come together on this train, but at least we can be sure that whatever they'll get into will be entertaining! Part of me hopes the two might cause less trouble after finding each other, but considering he's a corrupt Brakeman and she's a murderous psychopath, I doubt anything resembling noble will happen.
When I spoke to Steven Ogg about Pike's absence in Snowpiercer's debut season, he assured me his character will get a lot more screen time in Season 2. Overall, Ogg spoke very highly (if in largely vague terms) about the upcoming season, and not just because he'll have a larger part to play in the TNT drama.
It's not just that. I'm super excited for Season 2. I think it just gets better. The world just deepens which is what you want. And, yeah, Mike's (Roche) got some fun, fun stuff. I look forward to it. I think Pike’s a fun, colorful, dynamic character that just continues to offer up a lot of surprises, and then some really cool shit.
It seems like Pike and Roche will both play much larger roles in Snowpiercer's central drama in Season 2, which isn't entirely surprising given the latter half of the now-concluded season. Beyond Roche's attempt to maintain order following Layton's revolution, Pike has shown a couple of times now that he's an opportunist. If there's a way for him to get ahead after Mr. Wilford's arrival, it's looking like he'll take that opportunity. For now, we can only wait and see!
