While Netflix’s popular series, The Queen’s Gambit, was always meant to last a single season, the show’s recent Golden Globes win raised the question of whether that could change. Series star Anya Taylor-Joy, who won Best Actress in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television for her role in the drama, opened up about the possibility of a second season.
Anya Taylor-Joy spoke to ET about the chances of there being a Season 2 of The Queen’s Gambit, saying:
Maybe. Not to disappoint anybody, but we just never thought about it. It was always a sapling to tree transition. You see her grow, you leave her in a good place. So we were genuinely surprised when people were like, 'Where's Season 2?’ That being said, I adore the entire team that made it and I would jump at the chance to work with them again.
Anya Taylor-Joy, who stars as orphaned chess prodigy Beth Harmon in The Queen’s Gambit, went on to say that she’s grateful that people connected to the story as they did because Beth means so much to her.
Whenever you do a project, it kind of feels like you're throwing your baby out of a window and when people catch it, that's just the best feeling in the world.
Anya Taylor-Joy’s thoughts about Season 2 of The Queen’s Gambit haven’t changed since she last spoke out about it in November 2020. The actress said she would come back if she was asked to, but believes Beth was left in a good place. Although the rest of her life will be an adventure as well, Taylor-Joy said the quest she goes on to find some form of peace, being able to be happy with who she is ended in a nice place.
The Queen’s Gambit first debuted on Netflix in October 2020 and is set during the Cold War era where Anya Taylor-Joy’s Beth struggles with addiction in a quest to become the greatest chess player in the world. In its first 28 days, Netflix reported that the series was viewed by 62 million households, making it then the most-watched limited series on Netflix ever. The Walter Tevis novel of the same name that the series is based on also became a New York Times bestseller decades after its original release in 1983. The show has made some impacts on the chess world, both negative and positive.
You can find all seven episodes of The Queen's Gambit starring Anya Taylor-Joy streaming on Netflix now, along with plenty of other options that have already debut this year.
