Keeping Up with the Kardashians only just concluded its 20-season run a few weeks ago. Many folks, as well as the promotion to the finale itself, likened the show wrapping to the “end of an era.” That era being one with a lot of messy relationship dynamics, shocking reveals and going from flying coach to billionaire status as the ultimate reality TV family. Now that it's over, though, one of the show's longtime executive producers is spilling the deets on filming the Kardashian-Jenners’ lives and, yes, including how difficult it was to cover Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's divorce.
As seen in one of the last episodes of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, it was very hard for the Kardashians to finally tell their crew – who they claim are like a “second family” – that they weren't going to continue with the show. One of the crew that was there was executive producer Farnaz Farjam, whom Kim Kardashian could even be heard saying seeing her made her get emotional. Farjam had been with the family since the very beginning in 2007 and, in an interview with Variety, she shared how difficult it was to cover Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s divorce in this last season:
It wasn’t as hard as it was when I was dealing with Caitlyn and Kris, or Scott and Kourt, or Lamar and Khloé because Kim really kept that to herself. She didn’t even really go too far with her family when it came to that — she really did just handle it.
It was clear to any viewer that Kim Kardashian was attempting to keep her marriage troubles discreet on this last season of Keeping Up with the Kardashians. Near the beginning, Kardashian was shown being rather cagey when her relationship started coming up in a conversation with Malika Haqq and Khloe Kardashian. In fact, she outright said she wouldn't film anything discussing her marriage. Yet, fans would then overhear Kim K. begging to talk or see Kanye West on the phone and, in her confessional, Kardashian said she needed “thick skin” in order to be with West.
Apparently, it was Kanye West’s lack of a presence during the final season of Keeping Up with the Kardashians that made it trickier to film the problems that ultimately might have been the culprits leading to divorce. Farnaz Farjam revealed,
Obviously, I’ve been watching them for 15 years. So, I can tell when somebody is struggling or going through a lot or has a lot on their mind or they’re behaving in a certain way to escape from something else. I could tell there were things going on. But I didn’t have to really navigate it because he didn’t really come around.
However, Kim Kardashian couldn't hide her marriage issues and impending divorce for long on Keeping Up with the Kardashians. In the final episodes, Kardashian was sobbing crying after an argument with Kanye West went downhill, as well as lamenting on-camera that the two needed to find happiness and go their separate ways.
The recent Keeping Up with the Kardashians reunion special shared a bit more insight (albeit rather cryptic) as to the exact breaking point that led to Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's divorce, which was filed in late February, almost two months after filming on the show concluded. Kardashian told Andy Cohen that is that it was due to a “general difference of opinions.” But the specifics of those opinions could be anything: social media tirades, politics, living separately, and so on.
Kim Kardashian hasn't stopped being publicly supportive of Kanye West, despite the divorce. Recent speculation in recent weeks about the rapper, though, indicates that the same cannot be said of West.
