Despite constant begging from fans, tons of letters and more fanboy hate than Peter Moore demonstrating Halo 3 at a Sony Gamer’s Day expo, Blizzard has held off on a StarCraft sequel for as long as possible. But then again, they had the bazillion-dollar money maker, World of Warcraft. They could all retire right now. However, they have finally answered the call of the fans and they are actually working on StarCraft II, as announced back on May 19th.
The following trailer from E3 is entirely dedicated to the Protoss and some of their nifty tech. One of the highlights of the trailer is the showcase of all the units in full 3D motion. It all looks rather decent. However I can’t help but think that maybe Blizzard is a half-decade behind when it comes to adding anything noteworthy to the RTS genre. “Decent” isn’t a bad word to describe a new game, but words like “extraordinary”, “astounding”, “remarkable” and “groundbreaking” are the kind of descriptors that newer games need to incite from writers. With games like Tom Clancy’s EndWar, World In Conflict and Halo Wars setting a revolutionary pace to the nothing-but stale RTS genre, it looks a little underwhelming having StarCraft II come onto the scene as if it was StarCraft 1.5, with the only notable change, prima facie, being the 3D modeled units. Still, I’m sure die-hard StarCraft fans will readily disagree that the game looks underachieved. But before speaking on anyone’s behalf, it would probably be better to take a look at the trailer and see if it breaks any ground. Enjoy.
