Hearthstone Season 2 Launches, Black Temple Card Back Up For Grabs
Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft's second season of Ranked Play has begun. Season 2 provides players with another reward for making your mark in head-to-head matches.
The new card back for Season 2 is based on the Black Temple. It's an attractive piece of art, with a shuriken-like logo in the center and stained-glass window patterns throughout. I wouldn't know the back based on the Black Temple if I wasn't told but nonetheless, it's a worthy collector's item.
"These card backs replace the art decorating the reverse side of your cards and are a great way to show off your Hearthstone accomplishments," Blizzard says. "Add the Black Temple card back to your collection by hitting Rank 20 in Ranked Play mode. The Black Temple card back will be awarded to you at the end of May’s Ranked Play Season."
Last season's Rank 20 reward was a red-and-gold card back inspired by Mists of Pandaria. The back should be added to your inventory as soon as you log in today. If you didn't play in Season 1, you've missed out on this reward permanently it seems.
The card back for hitting Rank 0, or Legend, is still the same. Unlike the Rank 20 back, the Legend Back isn't added to your inventory at the end of the season. You receive it immediately after achieving the rank.
Some players were having issues at the end of Season 1 with their Legend backs not showing up. However, Blizzard says that the bug is fixed.
"This issue should now be resolved. If you have been affected by this issue, please relog into Hearthstone - your card back should be waiting for you. Congratulations on becoming a Legend!"
If you're intent on getting every card back in the game, be aware that a new Fireside Friends back was added to the game last week. It can be earned by playing three matches while on the same subnet as two other players. It's a way to reward Hearthstone fans for attending local events.
Your performance in Season 1 determines your starting rank in Season 2. For each rank you attained last season, you'll get a bonus star. For example, I was Rank 20 last season so I started out Season 2 at Rank 23. It's a way of keeping the matchmaking intelligent even at the start of a season. If everyone was reset to Rank 25, you'd have new players facing off against world champions on day one.
During Season 2 we should get updates on some of Hearthstone's upcoming features. Blizzard is planning to add a single-player adventure called Curse of Naxxramas as well as a spectator mode. Maybe we'll get release dates for them sometime in May. In the meantime, watch out for midrange hunters and zoo warlocks.
