This trend of adding unnecessary ancillary characters and species to our favorite franchises is a tad grating on the nerves. In Force Unleashed there’s now a heretofore unmentioned Secret Apprentice, and today we’re getting word that Cryptic is decided to kick Trekkies in the balls. The official reveal at the Star Trek Experience had yet to come out before the AP put up an interview with Cryptic CEO Jack Emmert.

The most interesting reveal about the upcoming Star Trek Online is that you’ll be able to choose an alien species to play as, or make up your own. So there you go. Go ahead and bend the Star Trek universe over your kitchen table and give it a good backdoor thumping. Let’s just disregard everything Gene Roddenberry has done, along with luminary Star Trek creative minds like Ron Moore, and do whatever the hell we like with the franchise. This, even though I’m not a fan of the franchise, seems a worse offense than completely mucking up the canon with a silly new movie or TV show. There’s no respect paid to the franchise if people can just make up batshit crazy alien species.

So now we’re going to have Cylons battling Klingons. The game takes place a few years after the last Trek film and will put players in control of their own Starfleet or Klingon ship. You’ll be able to explore worlds, date green hot chicks, and not hang out with the OG crew. You won’t be seeing Spock or Kirk in your travails around the galaxy.
