The Creative Assembly released their first mobile game in the Total War series today. Total War Battles: Shogun, in which players battle for supremacy of medieval Japan, is available on the iPad, iPod Touch, and iPhone for $6.99.

In Shogun, players take control of their own clan in a 10-hour campaign. They must build up their clan's resources and raise armies. Then, players command their forces in real-time battles. Battles work a bit different than they did in the PC Total War games; they play out on a hex-based grid and there's no retreating.

"Total War fans will naturally enjoy the intense, deep and rewarding action-strategy gameplay, while more casual strategy fans will appreciate the Zen simplicity of the opening tutorial battles, scalable difficulty level and hint system that will soon make them a tactical master," says Creative Assembly.

The game also supports 1v1 multiplayer. You and a friend can go head-to-head on the same iOS device in three different game modes.

Creative Assembly envisions Total War Battles to be a an entire sub-series for the franchise. They've created a new Total War Digital team to focus on handheld games. Their next project is an Android version of this game.
