Will Mera Have A Different Costume In Justice League?

When the Justice League forms together for the first time this November, moviegoers will also meet/reunite with key figures from each of the superheroes' personal lives. For Aquaman, one of those people will be Amber Heard's Mera, Atlantean warrior and future love interest to the hero of the Seven Seas. From what little we've seen of Mera in the Justice League promotional material, she'll be wearing her traditional green costume from the comics, but a new toy for the upcoming superhero movie has us wondering if she'll also don a red variant of that outfit during the story.

As has become the norm with Marvel and DC superhero theatrical releases, Justice League has received its own line of Funko Pop! Vinyl figures. There are two Mera figures available as Hot Topic exclusives. The first is her wearing the standard green costume, but as you can see above, there is also a figure of her wearing a red costume and rocking completely white eyes. It's important to remember that toys connected to superhero movies aren't always reliable indicators about what will be seen in the movie itself (remember the grey Hulk Pop! Vinyl figure that was released for Avengers: Age of Ultron?), but nevertheless, this is a cool look for Mera.

Having Mera don a red outfit in Justice League certainly wouldn't be unprecedented. In the 2009-2010 comic book event Blackest Night, Mera was turned into a Red Lantern, so it's possible that this Funko variant is paying tribute to the brief time when she controlled the red light of rage. We can definitely count on Mera not becoming a Red Lantern during Justice League, because outside of Steppenwolf mentioning the Green Lanterns and a possible cameo from a member of the Green Lantern Corps, the Lantern mythology isn't expected to play into the superhero team-up tale. If Mera does indeed end up wearing a red costume in Justice League, presumably it's just another version of her traditional Atlantean uniform. But then that leaves the question of why her eyes are white. Since a Red Lantern ring is out, I'm guessing it's connected to one of the Mother Boxes.

Mera will debut in Justice League alongside Willem Dafoe's Vulko when Jason Momoa's Aquaman visits Atlantis, where one of the three Mother Boxes was hidden thousands of years ago following the battle between Darkseid's forces and the humans, Amazons and Atlanteans. Once the Justice League has dealt with Steppenwolf and his Parademon army, Mera will return in Aquaman to help Arthur Curry protect Atlantis from malevolent forces, including Black Manta and Arthur's half-brother, Orm, a.k.a. Ocean Master.

Justice League will be released on November 17, and Aquaman will dive into theaters on December 21, 2018.
