The highly anticipated launch of the alpha for Camelot Unchained has been delayed. How delayed? Well, it's not a delay by a few days but a delay by a substantial amount of time because the team hit a snag with a massive bug that's causing some unidentifiable crashing.
Over on the Camelot Unchained website there's a post detailing the game's alpha delay, with Mark Jacobs explaining...
“As for the second step, we need to tell you when Alpha is going to open. Our expectation is that it will be a very short delay, but Andrew needs to decide the best way to fix the problem over the next few days. If all goes well, we might actually have Alpha open before we come up with the date, but we are not going to promise that. We will certainly know by the end of next week. But right now, well, it’s been a long couple of weeks and we are all a bit tired. So now isn’t really the best time to think about or discuss this.”
Things hit a snag during a live-stream for Camelot Unchained. While the team was showcasing the game for backers they kept running into a bug that caused the game to crash. They haven't been able to identify the source of the crash but in trying to fix one problem they discovered another. A second bug was also causing crashing. They managed to fix the second bug.
Nevertheless, there's still a lot of checking, re-checking and checking some more that has to be done in order to identify and squelch the problem.
In coding it's easy to have these issues pop up. It could be a conflict with the memory controller; it could be misplaced data going in the wrong direction at the right time; it could be a simple access module returning a null value and causing the whole thing to tailspin in a loop that forces the game to crash. It could be anything.
One of the things I used to do back in the day is give it a break. Coding is one of the most mentally taxing tasks out there and you can easily wreck your brain trying to figure out where that one line is that's causing you so much heartache. A good night's rest, some time off and a day to just ease off the process usually helped. Going in with a clear head was oftentimes, 100% the best way to solve the problem... and usually the problem was something a lot simpler than what was originally thought.
In the case of Camelot Unchained, the game is pretty massive so the team (mostly the programmers) definitely have their hands full when it comes to testing the game code and squashing bugs.
On the upside, at least they seem to be on the right track for fixing the game right proper. Kingdom Come: Deliverance is another game that's also going through the alpha phase after being crowd-funded, and they encountered a couple of delays as well.
A tri-realm MMORPG with social, economic and combat gameplay mechanics is no easy task, and if a game is aiming to compete with the likes of World of Warcraft, Wildstar, Elder Scrolls Online or TERA Online in the MMO space, they'll really have to bring their A-game.
But Jacobs ends the update on the website on a positive note, writing...
“What I can say is that if we think the delay will be more than a week, well, we have something to show our Alpha folks that will take some of the sting out of it.”
