The new trailer for Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 is out, and while it offers you the opportunity to play as a sniper, as one might expect, it also promises significantly more. While Sniper Ghost Warrior is a bit of a mouthful, it's a title that describes the different ways the game can be played. Sniper, Ghost, and Warrior are actually three distinct play styles that the game allows you to use. See how each of them works below.
The storyline of Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 has you play as an American sniper dropped into the former Soviet republic of Georgia. From there, you must decide the best way to accomplish your missions. Fighting as a sniper means keeping your distance, using drones to get the lay of the land and locate your targets before literally blowing their brains out in some fairly bloody, slow-motion shots. The Ghost path is a more covert attack, sneaking up on enemies and taking them down in close quarters hand to hand fighting. The Warrior side looks to be your traditional first person shooter attack, run and gun, taking down everybody who gets in your way.
Unlike previous entries in the Sniper Ghost Warrior series, the third entry promises an open world, with dynamic weather and a day/night cycle which will actually impact the game, and thus impact your decisions about which way to take out any given objective. Previous entries in the series have been fairly linear affairs, so Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 looks to be trying new things in order to broaden the game's appeal, and simply avoid making the same game over again. Most gamers can certainly get behind that.
CI Games, the developer of the Sniper Ghost Warrior series is clearly trying to up their game. The production values look significantly better here than the previous entries in the system. While it may be too early to tell from this limited trailer just what the final product will look like, it certainly feels like a step in the right direction.
There's also plenty of time for CI Games to get Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 exactly where they want it to be. The trailer gives us the release date of January 27, 2017. This is a good sign, if for no other reason than it shows an intentional decision to not try and push the game out during the lucrative holiday game season. On the one hand, it's possible the studio felt a game like Ghost Warrior might be overlooked with so many other titles on the loose, but on the other, all games sell in December. Either way, not rushing it out will hopefully mean a quality product when it's released.
