During this year's EGX event in Birmingham, England, gamers were treated to a number of demonstrations of various upcoming games, ranging from Kickstarted projects like Yooka-Laylee, to mega-blockbuster AAA titles like Final FantasyXV from Square Enix. In the case of the latter, there was 40 minutes of gameplay showcased for the upcoming title.
Leveling up is done through the Astral Sphere system, which is how players improve and upgrade the characters' abilities. We get to see how there's a giant sphere and various skills branched throughout like a typical skill tree.
It's mentioned that players unlock abilities through AP or through leveling up. Each of the four characters will have their own Astral Spheres, where players can level them up as they progress through the game. Each character has their own specialty, with Prompto focusing on guns and Ignis focusing on buffs. There are various branches within the Astral Spheres to suit the play-style of different players, so how you scale them throughout Final Fantasy XV will determine how effective your team is in the game and how they can be utilized during battle.
It's explained that, despite the complexity of the Astral Sphere setup, it's easy to get into because the game will hold the hands of newcomers to help introduce them to the world. One way of learning about how to play and how to maximize the potential of Noctis and his friends is by taking on bounty quests that can be picked up at the local diners around the game world.
They enter into combat to briefly showcase the new mechanics. They introduce gamers gamers to the new combo attack, which can be executed when the combo meter fills up. In the video Noctis executed a team-up combo attack with Prompto, similar to the combo system from Chrono Trigger.
The combat makes a lot more sense after seeing Kingsglaive as Noctis has the ability to teleport just like the Kingsglaive elite soldiers in the movie.
Another aspect that they explain that you may not have known about is that experience caches up and you can cash in on that experience by camping. Successfully camping will unlock the built up experience in order to allow players to access the next level.
They also reveal that Prompto will randomly take pictures throughout the adventure, chronicling the journey. Some of the photos are preset based on story cut-scenes, but then there are random photos that Prompto will take while you're just doing stuff. They also reveal that the various characters have different outfits that you can equip them in as well.
You'll be able to experience everything you see in the videos above when Final Fantasy XV releases on November 29th for the Xbox One and PS4.
