The folks over at Steam have decided to hand out their own awards this year, giving users a chance to vote on their favorite games in a wide variety of clever categories. The process is super easy, too.
Now that the Steam Autumn Sale has gone live and your wallet is likely weeping from the amount of money you're spending on games you may never have time to play, wouldn't it be nice to nominate some of those games for some fun awards?
That's the spirit of The Steam Awards, which give players a chance to pay honor to titles like DOOM, Dishonored 2, Fallout 4, Rocket League, Stardew Valley, Rainbow Six: Siege, Dark Souls III and so, so many more. While not all of the games available for nominations actually came out in this past year, they're still games that, throughout 2016, were a big focus for discussion due to continued relevance, late blooming or fantastic post-launch support.
To vote for a game, you just need to go to its Steam store page between now and Nov. 29 and click on the big purple button that says "Nominate this game for an award."
But, unlike most game awards, Steam isn't giving out trophies for Best Adventure Game, Best Sports Game, Best FPS or tired categories like that. Instead, they've got a handful of fun categories to dish out some hardware for, including:
"Test of Time" Award: A game that's as good today as it was the first time you played it.
"I'm Not Crying, There's Something In My Eye" Award: The game that had a major emotional impact on the player.
"Just 5 More Minutes" Award: The game that keeps pulling the player back for more until, oops, it's suddenly 5 a.m.
"Whoooaaaaaa, dude!" Award: Whether it's a plot twist or an insane set piece, this is for the game that "blows your mind."
"Villain Most In Need of a Hug Award: Bad guys are exactly that, bad. Sometimes, though, a bad guy is so bad you just want to wrap your arms around them and let them know that everything is going to be okay.
"Game Within A Game" Award: Do you have a mini-game hidden inside of a regular game that you played almost as much as said regular game? This award is for exactly that.
"I Thought This Game Was Cool Before It Won An Award" Award: The most hipster title of all, this category is for games that maybe went under the radar but were fantastic anyway.
"Best Use Of A Farm Animal" Award: Well this one certainly came out of left field. If you've got a favorite game that did something great with animals, now is the time to heap them with praise.
"We Didn't Think of Everything" Award: This category is for your write-in votes. If you think a game should win something for a category not listed here, just enter it manually and a selection committee may decide to hand it out.
